so the UC website recently released the prompts for the personal statement.
they say that you can allocate the 1000 words between the two questions as you see fit, with a suggested minimum of 250 words for the shorter response.

my question: has anyone ever successfully attempted to blend the two prompts into a single 1000 word response?

theres distinct sections where you have to write in the online app, if can remember correctly from high school.... so i dont think you can do that. but i may be mistakened......

Yea there is two different spaces, theoretically you can do this but If you decide not to follow the rules then I can guarantee that it will hurt you chances to UCLA and Berkeley.

Posts on this forum have pointed out to me that one of the main things I learned during my time in the military was attention to detail and doing what you're told. Based on my background, last year when I read "1,000 words total between two prompts, don't go below 250 for a shorter response"...I did exactly what they said. I wasn't one of those people asking "OMG I have 1,150 words...is that ok?"

I don't know if anyone has ever successfully blended the two prompts together. There are two boxes - one for each prompt. I guess you'd have to leave one blank. My advice is not to try it, unless you like to play so carelessly with such a large milestone in your life. If you do it and pull it off, let us know. That might actually be pretty sweet.
