Question Regarding UC Personal Statements....

"Respond to both questions, using a maximum of 1,000 words total. You may allocate the word count as you wish. If you choose to respond to one prompt at greater length, we suggest your shorter answer be no less than 250 words. Stay within the word limit as closely as you can. A little over — 1,012 words, for example — is fine."

I just wanted to clarify: does this mean that the total word count of both prompts TOGETHER must total 1000 words (more or less)?

Or rather, does this mean that EACH prompt must be written to a total of 1000 words (more or less)............

Thanks so much!

Both prompts together can be a total of 1000 words.

yup together the total amount of words u can use for both essays put together is 1000.
u can go a little bit over 1000 though, like maybe 20-30 words.

“using a maximum of 1,000 words total” Each essay is 500 words (or 600-400, etc as long as its less than or equal to 1000 total). They should be somewhat equal though, I wouldn’t make them too different in length.

Wow love this forum lol…thanks so much for the insanely quick replies!

Yeah everybody has it down pat
They said, also, that they’ll give you a little bit of leeway if you have like 12 words over, for instance. But not much more!

"They should be somewhat equal though, I wouldn’t make them too different in length. "

Not true. I talked to a rep about this. The rep said as long as they can get a better picture of you, beyond your stats, then it doesn’t matter if one prompt is significantly longer than the other.

I believe mine was 1015 words, for what it’s worth.

the statement can be up to 1100 words, otherwise it wouldn’t go through the system. the university itself does not count your words.

So technically, you can write up to 1100 words, and it doesn’t count against you? 100 extra words is a lot. Are you sure about this?

mine is 1059. is that fine? @ksForBerkeley are you sure about that 1100 word count thing?

^ I would take whatever you find here with a grain of salt. The thread is two years old, and as such the content might be outdated.

Is 700 for both okay?

@jbLighty 700 for both is too much.
@iwantanswers I’m not sure the UC app will let you go over 1000. Try, but I think the system will truncate your PS when you copy and paste.

LOL u guys r trolling. If you go over 1000, you can’t submit your app. either 1000 or less.

what is it with these people saying 1010 words are okay? I had 1002 words and I had to limit it down to 1000 or I couldn’t move on in the application.

It’s because the UC hasn’t revised its directions regarding personal statements.

Anyone have an idea for a safe minimum for word count?

Proofread ur essay and try to find useless words such as THE, AND, ect…

Wow, so the UCs are serious about the word limit this year that they won’t let you go on if you go over 1000 words?
