Okay - I've been working on this schedule thing - and I have a question. For Math 113 - college algebra - there are several sections which meet three times a week for 50 minutes. Then there are other sections which meet three times a week for 50 PLUS a fourth time for an additional 75 minutes.

Whats the deal? Why the extra meeting for some and not for others?

Same credits - same class description - I don't get it!

Brownie points for putting my name in the title.

I want to warn you that this is a COMPLETE guess.

Considering all the 05xx sections are the ones that have the Discussion, my guess is those sections are specially reserved for people who aren't as good at Math as others. Reading the description, the University may require students take the section with the Discussions as a condition for taking the class if the did poorly on the placement exam, or did poorly in their previous Math courses.

i have no idea.... it seems that the 50 minute sections are lectures, and the additional 75 minutes for the select sections is a discussion... it makes no sense that there would be extra. usually what happens (this happened with my QUEST class for the fall) is that it is fixed over time (ie, both of my quest class section offerings had class scheduled from 1230-145, but only 1 of them had 7-850 included). i dont know if this will change, but it is quite puzzling. if youre comfortable with your math skills id just sign up for one of the 3-meeting ones and wait to see if they add a 75 minute section. if not, youre saving yourself more than an hour a week. and as bad as math lectures are, discussions are even worse.

Yeah - that makes sense. And the 3x a week make it so much easier to try and pull together a schedule. I'm a Bio major/Art minor and between a Chem lab and a Bio lab and 7 hours a week in one 3 credit Art class - I'll take that extra hour and run with it!

What's to keep me from "dropping in" on a discussion session if I'm having a problem with something?

Ha! You guys are urban legend in our house - when a question comes up - somebody says - go ask the gang on the discussion board! You deserve a lot of thanks for all of us for the free counselling!
