im at a cc right now and im deciding wheter to apply as a poli major or a bio major... i come under the understanding that many med school applicants are bio majors and i was just wondering if it would give me a slight advantage if i chose another sort of major for instance like poli sci? would this be a advanage or disadvantge regarding admisions? i know that it would be better if i was a science major when regardingt preparing for either the DAT or MCATS but whats your postion on majors?

No advantage or disadvantage simply from the major. medical schools simply don't seem to care.

Advantage on the MCAT or DAT is nil. You'll take the same intro courses as everyone else, and in some cases knowing a lot about a particular science topic is dangerous on the MCAT because all the info is in the passage (w/ exceptions in some cases of formulas), and bringing in outside knowledge can lead you to the wrong answer. This is less true on the DAT because the science portions there are not passage based.

I was a Sociology major, one of my best friends in med school was PoliSci as I believe BlueDevilMike was, I have many friends who were psych majors as well. I currently have a friend who is going to be a junior next year who is majoring in Guitar Performance and is also pre-med.

My advice is major in what you are passionate about, what you are going to enjoy for the next couple of years - it's pretty much the last chance you are going to have to study topics in depth.

Statistically, no difference exists. Period. Various majors are admitted to medical school in almost exactly the same percentages in which they apply.

Pick whatever you like.

(And ECON! Not PoliSci...)

Whoops...sorry. That's good though, b/c I have a lot more respect for econ than I do for polisci (just on the basis of my friends who majored in each).

Econ is pretty awesome. :D
