Question on Programs at SLO

Hello all,
So I was looking for a place to ask a few questions about SLO and realized this would probably be a good place to do it. If that assumption isn’t correct, I apologize but I don’t know where else to ask this so here goes.

Anyways, I was wondering, what type of robotics does SLO run? I saw they had a robotics program but was wondering if they worked with any official companies like VEX, VEX U, or FIRST. I’ve become quite interested in a VEX program at my school and would like to continue this interest in college.

Also, does their agriculture program have an aquaponics class or anything with aquaponics?

Finally, if they don’t have one or either of these, would it be possible for me as a freshman to start them?

Thanks everyone in advance.

The robotics program here isn’t associated with FIRST from what I know, but they do host their own VEX competition:

I can relate to your situation. In high school I did FIRST for two years and loved it. The robotics department here tends to work on smaller projects in teams rather than larger ones. For example, some of the following are projects for this year: Robo-Mobile Platform, SWARM (bot communication), UAV (quadcopter), UROV (submarine vehicle), IGVC ( autonomous golf cart), and Lego Robotics Mentoring. You can also propose a project too if needed.

Of course these projects aren’t going to be the same every year, but hopefully this will give you a sense of the types or projects that are worked on. There are many engineering disciplines and multiple projects allow more people to work on projects relevant to their passions.

I don’t know if Cal Poly has anything about aquaponics. A quick google search didn’t yeild much either.

@r77r77 Ok thanks for the info. I knew a few guys who went up to the event but was wondering if SLO had an actual VEX or FIRST team. Have you been involved with the robotics at SLO? And ok ya I did the same with a google search but didn’t find anything about aquaponics.

To continue off of this though, do you think it would be possible for me to start either of these programs as a freshman? It sounds like SLO may not be interested in VEX as much but it would be cool to try.

No, because they can’t get their pneumatics to 90 degrees for maximum torque. If only they had someone to help them do that

No they don’t have a VEX team, and as far as I’m aware FIRST does not have competitions for colleges. I did robotics for a short time, but I moved on as it didn’t work well with my schedule.

You could definitely start your own club:
