Question on Tax return form 1040

The FAFSA wksheet asks what my parents' income tax for 2008 was, and I'm using my 2007 Form, and it says to look at line 56, but line 56 is total CREDITS, and i have 0 for that.

However, line 63 is TOTAL TAX, and line 64 is FEDERAL INCOME TAX withheld from Forms W-2 and 1099... both lines have values..

Can anyone help me on this? Is the wksheet putting down the wrong line to look at? Which value would I put down?

I second this question!

You want line 57 on the 2007 Form 1040.

It will be the total tax line. The line will vary depending on which return your parents filed (1040, 1040a, 1040ez etc) and the 2007 tax forms will be different from the 2008 one so you need to read the words when you are using previous years forms to estimate. Tax witheld is not the correct amount as tax witheld is rarely the exact amount of tax you end up owing.

thank you lots!
