Question on what I am considered?

So I graduated high school in 2009, and then from then on, I went to Cal State Northridge for the whole year (2009-2010). Then this year, I am going to Irvine Valley CC so (2010-2011). I just applied to UCI, UCSD, UCLA, UCSB and would like to know what they will classify me as? Will I be a CC student or a CSU student? I'm kind of nervous if they classify me as a CSU student because it will be alot tougher to transfer. What do you guys think?

Thanks

I believe if you’re under 30 units from CSUN then you’re a CC transfer. Can somone pls confirm?

Just out of curiosity, what was your major at CSUN and what major are you transferring to?

I completed 27 units at CSUN. Took 6 units over the summer at IVC, and now taking 15 units for fall. Will be taking 19 next Spring.

I was in Criminology. Applied to Criminology at UCI, and Psychology at UCLA,UCSD, and UCSB

@soysauce: The cap is 20 semester/30 quarter units. You’re over that, so you’ll be considered a CSU transfer.

There is some debate on here as to whether you can reestablish yourself as a CC student or not. My understanding of this, from the admissions counselors I’ve spoken with on numerous occasions, is that once you cross that unit cap you’re considered a transfer from a 4 year university and cannot be considered a CC student anymore. Others seems to have conflicting views on that, but nobody can seem to get a straight answer.

That said, you’ve only been at a CC for a year anyway, so you wouldn’t be a CC transfer regardless.

@Grimes - is that a fact? who did you hear that from?

@soysauce: I didn’t pull the 30/20 number out of nowhere, haha :P

I almost walked into a similar situation last year, so I had to ask this question dozens of times to UCSD admissions counselors. I was sitting in with the director of the division of student affairs at UCSD (my situation was somewhat complex) and the 30/20 was confirmed to me.

So I guess that sucks for me…

What are the chances for me to make UCI with a 3.4 GPA after this fall? Criminology

@soysauce: Probably pretty solid. I think UCI accepted all CC transfers down to a 2.8 or 3.0 last year, so with a 3.4 I’d say you’re good. I got in with a 3.03.

@Grimes: but I’ll be considered as a CSU student! Isn’t that the lowest chances?

@soysauce: Nope, that honor falls on out of state 4 year University transfers. You’re below CCC students, but not at the bottom.

Just wondering but what was harder? Csun or CCC?

@Grimes: I see. I gave an email to the UC to confirm. Let’s hope they changed it this year! Hope its under 30 semester units, because 20 semester units is kinda weird…not saying you are wrong :P

@nabilesmail: CSUN was definitely harder, hahaha.

I don’t think how many units you take at CSU matter as to whether you’re classified as a CCC or a CSU student. To be considered a CCC student all that has to happen is that your last 30 units were completed at a CCC and that a CCC is your most recent school. Units you took at CSU come into play as you can clear the 70 transferable unit cap that CCC students hit but as long as you stay under 90 CCC/CSU combined units your still eligible for transfer.

Here’s the definition of CCC student off the UCSD tag agreement for fall 2011

" You must be a California community college student. Do you meet the
definition?
o You have been enrolled at one or more CCCs for at least 2 regular
terms (excludes summer sessions)
o You have completed at least 30 semester (45 quarter)
UC-transferable units at a CCC
o You are attending a CCC as your last college before UC San Diego
admission (excludes summer sessions) "

No mention of a limit of units you took at a 4 year.

Yup, that’s where it gets weird. There’s no mention of it on the TAG agreement, but talk to an admissions counselor and you get an entirely different story.

That’s for the TAG agreement, though, which is different than general UC admission guidelines.

@UCeric0210: yay you just made my day…but it says You have been enrolled at one or more CCCs for at least 2 regular
terms (excludes summer sessions)
^ does that count for me? I’m enrolled in 2010 fall (Right now), and then (2011) spring.

The University of California defines California community college transfer applicants as students who have enrolled at one or more California community colleges for at least two terms (excluding summer sessions), whose last college attended before admission to a UC campus was a California community college (excluding summer sessions), and who have completed the last 30 semester/45 quarter units at one or more California community colleges.

^ I got this off of UCI’s website. So do I fulfill that? :O

@ Soysauce: Yes, if you take classes Fall 2011 and Spring 2011 you will meet that requirement as long as you complete at least 30 units at CCC.

My friend went to CSU for two years and had about 50 units (about 40 transferable) and then transferred to CCC took exactly 30 units over summer session, fall and spring and was admitted to UCSD and UCSB as a CCC transfer so don’t stress too much you should be fine.

Really, I always thought that the rigor in Cal states was the same as community college lol.
