If you put an enrollment deposit down at a school to secure housing but are then accepted somewhere else that you prefer, it is ok to call the first school back and withdraw enrollment consideration and then accept the other school?

Yes, as long as the first school wasn’t ED

Some schools encourage housing deposits once accepted (even before committing), some encourage them even before acceptances come out and some just have a date you need to deposit by to be guaranteed housing. Some are refundable, some aren’t. Make sure you read the fine print. There is a post on one of the forums about a family that paid a deposit and although they didn’t commit to the school and called to tell them, they kept getting billed because they didn’t specifically cancel the housing deposit.

It would be helpful if you share the name of the school. There aren’t many schools that require an enrollment deposit in order to secure housing…it’s more common that schools require a housing deposit without having to put down an enrollment deposit. Regardless, yes, you can commit to another school and let this enrollment commitment go, but the deposit may not be refundable. At most schools you have until May 1 to make your enrollment deposit, so, you don’t have to put down an enrollment deposit before then, if you want time to decide or weigh other offers.

I think Alabama is a big one that requires the enrollment deposit for housing.

We put down the nonrefundable enrollment deposit to secure housing after confirming that none of D24s other top choices did.

Yes but there are times that you might lose that deposit.
