Question Regarding a Master's in Electrical Engineering

I will be attending UC Irvine in the fall to get a master's in electrical engineering. There are two different plans offered for the M.S. degree: a thesis option and a comprehensive exam option. I'm leaning towards the thesis because I want to do research in a lab and have something to show for my work. Do most Master's students secure a research adviser before they start classes in the fall? And also, will I have a hard time in grad level EE courses since I got my undergrad degree in biomedical engineering?
