I submitted my own web design portfolio through the form of a website, and I got into MIT early action. Of course, it’s quite possible that they hated my portfolio but liked the rest of my application enough, but I don’t think including one could hurt. I’ll leave it for more experienced people to say how much it may help, but I thought I’d mention that I had submitted one too.

As for checking, I think one should assume that they might check anytime between the day the application is submitted and the day results come out. As far as I know they don’t really have a set date after which they start examining the supplements; they probably look at them as they go through each application. (In short, that website should be completed BEFORE January.)

1) Yes, you may submit an online supplement of your works. A number of our applicants do this, with everything from fancy portfolio flash sites to simply linking to their deviantart accounts.

2) You may also consider submitting a formal supplement to our art department, who can help evaluate what your artwork would bring to MIT and add that context to your application.

3) We evaluate either formal or informal portfolios at any point after the Jan 1 deadline.

Good luck!
