Question regarding FAFSA

Hello all, I was completing my FAFSA just a moment ago and I ran into a statement I was unsure about. For background information, I am an US Citizen but I live outside of the United States in Asia.

The question/statement was : For 2012, have your parents completed their IRS income tax return or another tax return?

Do I say yes for this question or no. Doesn't the IRS income tax return only correspond to those in the United States? But I am a citizen...Help is appreciated.

We really can’t tell you whether your parents have completed a tax return. You will have to ask them.

I’m pretty sure they did. So this question applies to me even though I live outside the US?

It applies to everyone because tax returns may be used to verify the FAFSA info.

I believe the possible responses are:

1) Will file
2) Have filed
3) Not required to file

You said you are a US Citizen, but you did not say if your parents are US Citizen(s). Technically, as an expatriate (US Citizen living abroad), they still have to file a US Income Tax Form and claim their Foreign Income. They would then get a credit for foreign taxes paid.

If they are not US Citizens, then they do not have to file a US Income Tax form.
