Question Regarding GPA-Admissions

Hello All! I hope Everyone is Having a Pleasant Summer!
I’m a incoming Junior in a Jesuit Prep School. It’s a very hard school to get accepted to it and it’s a very good one. My question is that I have a 89.5 unweighted GPA; which is 0.5 away from a 4.0 in our school. Should I say I have a 3.95 GPA?
Also, while I’m on the topic, I’m a Varsity Letter swimmer for my school ( 3 years), taking AP English, Biology Honors, Algebra 2 Trig Honors for Junior Year. I was chosen to represent my school in Camden for a Volunteering trip in June, and I also volunteer by teaching little kids swimming(Certified Lifeguard, CPR/First Aid). In my school I’m in the Stock Market Club, French Club, and Recycling Comity.

To get into the USAFA was my dream since I was young. I always wanted to be a Air Force pilot. So once I discovered this Academy my Sophomore year I knew what I had to do. Emigrating from Eastern Europe (I’m a Citizen Now) I always wanted to give back to America for what its given me. I’m grew up not in the best neighborhood but there was always opportunity to go forward. I was accepted into the Jesuit prep School by me being in the top 5% of my middle school. I was there and I started losing sight of hard work; since I found out about college costs, and what strain that it will bring to the family. I thought to myself “you know, why hard work even If I’m smart but I can’t afford”? So freshman year I had a 87 Avg with no Honors. Sophomore Year I took Math Honors beacuse that’s my strong subject, but with no motive to work, so I had an 83 Avg. I was feeling down in the dumps but then one day my neighbor ( a WW2 Veteran) spoke with me and knocked me straight, saying not to give up on my goals, and not to stop believing in dreams. I thought to myself: “Damn, look what the military does to a man, it makes him a leader”. And there I remembered my dream of being an Air Force pilot; a dream I almost gave up. So there I was middle of Sophomore year with an 83 Avg. I researched my options and I found this place; a academy designed to create future leaders, open to all socioeconomic classes, and most importantly one that gives back to America. I saw what the requirements were and I told myself time to get it into gear. I stepped up to the plate and now my avg went up 6.5% to 89.5% in half a year. So how are my chances looking to get into USAFA ?{Sorry for Long Read}

First of all your gpa is 0.5 off of 4.0, thus it is 3.5 not 3.95

Try to attend SLS next summer.

Also remember even if you don’t get appt, you can also get a full ride scholarship through AFROTC and commissioned that way.

The only way you will not have a chance of being apptd is if you don’t apply.

Good luck!

Also take the SAT as soon as possible, the avg for cadets are @1300+ out of 1600.

Thanks but what I meant by the Gpa is
90% in my school is a 4.0 unweighted
so if I have a 89.5% GPA what do I have a 3.95?

I don’t think it works that way, you should just report what you have in your schools system and the academy will re-weight it. For example, I took some tough high school classes but my school has no weighting system, so my straight As were the same as someone who took the minimum number of easy classes and got all As. The academy re-weighted my GPA to a 4.34 when I applied

USAFA is correct, they will re-weight it even if you put in 3.95. Also I think you can put in %, since you are not a rarity, many schools only do %. I can tell you if it you were taking plain classes, no honors your uw would be 3.58, no matter how you roll it, the weigh gpas are made are to take the % and multiply it by 4.0, Your school might use the generalization that an A any A is 4.0, a B any B is 3.0, seeing as 90 is an A, you have an 89, thus a B you’re at 3.0 in that theory.

You are a rising jr. you have plenty of time, one day go into the gc’s office and find out exactly what your gpa is. My bet is under your scenario you are 3.0, if it is mine you are 3.58 uw. In no case are you a 3.95. Sorry, but that is the truth, an 89.5 on an uw scale is not a 3.95.

Also, not only is your gpa important, but so is your course curriculumn, they will look more favorably on the kid that has an 89.5% uw with 6 AP’s than the kid who has an 89.5 with 6 honors. They will reweight to reflect that. You need to take the hardest classes you can.

BTW DS’s uw did not change, but his w did, it actually came down lower. 4.17 down to 4.07

Ask your school for a copy of your unofficial transcript. It might have the 4.0 conversion on it…the one that they send to colleges that ask for 4.0 scales.
