Question thread: Ask an LSE grad student

hi nauru,
First thank you for all the information you've posted on this thread.
You mentioned, there are better universities in Europe than LSE. and I suppose we're not talking about big brand names such as oxford or cambridge. For a Econ. MA what are some of these institutions in your opinion? I like the UK and the programs offered at LSE... but i'm trying to get information about not so "prestigious" but excellent universities in the rest of Europe.

im frm ranchi..completed my B.A Economics (hons) frm St.Xavier's college,Ranchi(jharkhand).i am a bit confuised abt the papers....which one's have u earmarked

Hi
I've selected EH 464 and EH 483 ...seem to be interesting.
I've sent u my email id on ur PM folder.U can contact me on that. So,have u got ur accommodation?Whn will u be reaching London?

I'm a little confused. I was reading through this thread's recommendations to attain admitance, but I feel as though my case is a little different.

I'm going to graduate from my state college next year with a degree in Economics and a 4.0 GPA at the age of 17. I wish to go to LSE, but in the states I'm told my age hurts my chances of getting into grad school. I will have solid letters of rec about my maturity from my professors as well as from my city's mayor (I intern to his finance advisor. We're one of the top 5 largest citites in the US).

However, I've been told by some it will be better for me to wait, obtain more work expereince, and take a few more math courses (I've only had Calc 1).

Do you have any idea how LSE views young applicants?

How hard are admissions to the masters programs? I'm currently a a senior at Georgetown, 3.67 gpa graduating with a bsfs in culture and politics. I was looking at the MSc Program in Environment and Development, do you know anything about it? It says no GED required, but would taking it anyway help?

Hi Nauru. I have an offer from LSE to read MSc Acct&Fin.

I'm interested in a winter internship at a bank in the City. Does the Career placement office in LSE helps prospective grad students in internship placement before school starts or do I have to apply to individual banks? I'm an international student outside the UK at the moment, so I'm lost as to how I could contact the banks in the City for internship. Also is the current employment climate gloomy in the City for internship?

Also which hall of residence do you recommend. My prime considerations are in order: 1)security 2)costs 3)proximity to campus. I heard alot about Bankside in this forum.

Lastly, I'm interested in asset managment. Is Acc&Fin a good platform to get there? Do hedge funds or banks recruit from this programme?

Thanks!

Hi,

I think you might have done the MSc Local Economic Development. I'm starting it this fall. Any advice? Was it worthwhile? What elective courses did you take? Was it common to take them outside the options listed for the programme?

I have a somewhat quantitative background in undergrad econ - only faster-paced calc but econometrics and quant senior creating regression using STATA. I like econ a lot but wouldn't call myself amazing at econ or math. Would it be crazy (grade-wise) to take econ-type courses at LSE? What do you know of prof Weinhold at DESTIN? She teaches a regression analysis course dealing with econ development policy I'm thinking of taking.

In terms of job search....if I'm not European is it even worth applying for jobs here in consulting or should I wait til I'm back home?

Thanks for your time.

I was wondering if anyone could answer this question for me? On the website it said their taught masters program in politics was 12 months from October to September? How could this be (as the academic year lasts from September to July?)

I'm not entirely sure whether this applies to the politics programme, but many UK Master's programmes are "taught" for the duration of the academic year, i.e. September-July, and then have the theis over the summer month. This is often the case when the thesis is "realtively" long, i.e. if it's more than just an extended essay with ~10,000 words.

Exams (in my program anyway) end on July 4, and then the dissertation is due a couple months after. You can choose to remain in London, or go wherever and submit it by mail. Some students are able to finish their dissertations before exams, and are then finished once exams are over.

I asked this on another forum as well but who are some of the notable faculty at LSE?

Hi Naru and all you wonderful ppl out there. Guys I am seeking advise from all of you on how I can enhance my selection chances at LSE

Well I am looking at doing MSc FInance from LSE.

For this reason I am building my CV keeping in mind what all advise I have got from my seniors. I am currently working for a student organization at the same time have been attached with a prominent ngo for alsmost 5 yrs. In my 1st yr I did an internship there as well.

Also this year i would be attending the SUmmer school course in Finance at LSE in July this yr

I am aware of the criteria that LSE has posted on its website like GRE 1st class equivalence in ur bachelor degree, but I want to know more from all of u.

I am lookinh at applying this year as I am closing in on my 2nd year. I am currently pursuing eco from top most university in India.
I was wondering if I can get some valuable points on how to enhance my selection chances. Is there somethinhg else that LSE looks at for sure for a course such as Msc FInance. Ofcourse I have done college level Maths..

Would also like to add that I have already started building on my recommendation letters.

Lastly I just heard from a friend of mine that International students who are willing to pay full fee and NOT through the scholarship regime for them the selection is easy.

So in a nutshell for I would like to know

*Summer school course does it help in your selection for Masters.
GRE Score? ALso score in gpa in ur bachelors for popular course such as FInance?
Anything else that could be advised for building my CV ?
International students who are willing to pay full fee and NOT through the scholarship regime for them the selection is easy.

Any inputs on recommendation letters or any other aspect would be more than welcome.

THanks

Regards
Akshay

Does that concern anyone? You're going to be going up against two-year MA programs and a one year is gonna look pretty lame. I highly doubt the ability of a one-year, or even 1.5-year program, to cram an MA's worth of knowledge into someone's head in that time.

i am a A lvl student in pakistan…am a lil bit cncerned abt ma future career abt wat 2 do…my parents intend 2 send me abroad to Uk for ma higher studies…now the problm iz tht wat i do am intrested in pursuing a buissness career wat u think would be the best degree i shd apply for in LSE??? a type of ddegree which has a demand in the market and after doing it i cud easily find a large salary job in UK or middle east??? plzz i need ur help???sum people say ACCA wud be best sum say BBA nd MBA??? wat shd i do frm LSE??? my o level grades r 5As and 4Bs…need ure help??

I am a Junior Political Science major who intends to apply to the MSc International Relations degree at LSE. I have a 3.7 gpa and a 4.0 in my major. I have some internship experience. Is there anymore that you suggest that I do to have a better application.

I am thinking about applying to LSE for MPA in International Development for fall 2010. I live in the USA now and not sure where I will settle. Does a degree from LSE carry over well to the USA. Can I get a job in US with degree from LSE?

If I want to find a job in NYC (or in the US in general) in the finance sector, as I have got a green card but not a UK permanent residency. Would it be better to go to LSE or Emory University for undergraduate study?

Hello everyone! Im going to take MSc Management Organisations and Governance from 2011. I was wondering if anyone could give tips on which courses to take. Especially information on which teachers are good or bad, or just general feelings on any of the modules.

Also, if anyone has any tips for SURVIVAL for this course, that would be great as well!

Thanx very much!

Do you have any tips around best/engaging professors and classes for the Lent term (listed here [Graduate course guides 2011/12](<a href=“Graduate course guides 2022)?%5DGraduate”>Graduate course guides 2022)?)

does lse provide any funding for international undergrads?
