Hi everyone,
I'm applying to the Scripps school for print journalism because it's supposed to one of the best of the country. However, I am from a very liberal background in CT. I know Ohio was a red state, but how is OU's campus politically?
Also, does anyone have any other input they want to share, just because it is a very different part of the country?

Athens is in the middle of nowhere, so you better have a car. Great party school, probably on the upper half of Ohio colleges. Pretty liberal student body and surrounding area, so you will be amongst fellow Dukakis hugging moon maidens. It was the only southern Ohio county to vote Kerry.

It was funny to see the COUNTY election map of Ohio. The entire southern part of the state was red, except for one little county in the southeast. You guessed it: Athens.

Did you apply yet? Since Ohio has rolling admissions and since Scripps is so competitive, the earlier the app, the better.

I entered it today!:) Scripps deadline... How long do they take to process?

Good for you. I don't know how long they'll take. My son got accepted to the university, but his Honors Tutorial application is still pending. If he make HTC, he'll do Film, but if not, he'll probably do TCOM. In his case, the general acceptance came back within a month, but Christmas break may slow things down a bit. Good Luck. have you visited OU yet?

Yeah, I visited last summer. I was surprised -- it's a really nice campus for a public university. I'm just thinking it will be nice to have hopefully good news from one school I can afford.

One thing to also look at are their guaranteed merit scholarships if you have certain GPA averages and SAT scores. Again, good luck.

BTW, one of the things that attracted us to OU in the first place is that of the four or five alums that I know, every one of them LOVED the place and was really sad when their four years were over and they had to leave the campus.

My daughter will be graduating from OU in June, and I'd be happy to try to answer any questions.

I believe OU ranked about #17 on the PR's Ranking of Schools w/ Happiest students. . . .As for a party school--you can party all the time, or apply yourself and learn, same as at most any state school of a similar size. The legendary Halloween party seems to be calming down.

There's not a lot of guaranteed merit scholarship money around, unless you have remarkably high standardized test scores--maybe at the ACT level of 30 and up.

chrisd - so did your daughter like it as well as everyone else I've met? We all fell in love with OU when we visited. Even though it's a large public university, the campus felt more like a private school. When we toured though, EVERYONE else was from Ohio.

One good thing about OU is that the out of state tuition is only about double the in-state tuition. My son is getting a full in-state tuition scholarship (he got a 33 on his ACT), which means that the tuition bill to us (out of state) will be just about what an in-state student would have to pay.

I do have a question for you, though. Freshmen are not allowed to have cars on campus, but are there any off-campus alternatives (even pay ones) for parking a car?

I'm from CT and Uconn in-state is only $1 or 2 k less than OU out of state, even if I don't get merit aid (which I think I will).

So you don't have to be into the party stuff and it's okay? Thanks...

eireann -

If you decide on OU, let me know (you can send an email via my profile) and I will send you my son's AIM/email address.

Hey, just found out that I got into Scripps!!!

Side note: were they going to tell me? I just checked statues out of boredom, and there it was...

Anyway, just wanted to share the exciting news that I am in somewhere...:)

Yay! Congrats. It's such an awesome school. Good luck with other apps, but I don't think you'd ever regret going with Scripps.
