Ohio University

hi I'm from florida but my sister in Ohio has been trying to convince me to go to OU. Right now im thinking about journalism/photojournalism/writing so scripps would be where I would study most (though interests could change). My question is is it worth going out of state? Hows the school over all? All and any opinions are helpful! (p.s. therea no way i'd get into University of Florida. If there was I wouldn't even consider anouther option)

I really recommend visiting the school first. The campus is beautiful, Athens is an AMAZING college town. Unfortunately (or fortunately, if that’s your thing), the campus life singularly revolves around partying, and while there are other things to do, there is substantial peer pressure to be “in the party scene”. I’m not sure how their admissions for Scripps works, but the college as a whole isn’t too tough to get into. Check to see if Scripps has a different application process than the rest of the college.

This is coming from a a kid who got denied from Ohio University. GO VISIT! Now im headed to my number one choice anyway and am very excited about it. But I am giving OU the props it deserves. Scripps is definitely a great journalism school is that is what you would to study! Although i would not recommend OU if you wanted to study anything else. OU is an awesome college town. And if you like to party ( which is okay if you don’t) OU is like a Utopia. There housing is literally neighborhoods of residence halls and the campus is gorgeous. The streets are cobble-stoned, and the visitor center looks like a hotel! The architecture is great, and its a very colonial looking campus( which i liked). Downtown Athens which is literally on campus is all bars, resturants, and little shops.

BUT: OU is very isolated so if your not into the whole rural scene you may be taken away. Also you live in Florida, and academically UF is far more superior than OU in every way, shape, and form. Also U of Miami, FSU, UCF, and USF are also great schools, so don’t overlook your instate schools.

It’s very difficult to get accepted to Scripps. Check out their web page. I think it spells everything out.

OU has a great communications program, but so does OSU, if you’re looking at Ohio.

I don’t know if I’d say it very difficult to get into Scripps. Top 15% and a 25 ACT to be considered. Granted those are not the stats for accepted students but the bar is not super high. [Colleges & Majors: Ohio University Admissions](http://www.ohio.edu/admissions/academics/comm.cfm) It is an excellent school for journalism.

My son is headed to OU in August. It also gives some nice merit money.

My question is is it worth going out of state

Well, it depends…will your parents happily pay the OOS costs?

Since you say that you won’t get accepted to UFlorida, that probably suggests that your stats aren’t high enough for merit scholarships to OU.

If that’s the case, then ask your parents if they’ll pay all OOS costs for that school.

What are your test scores and GPA?

I don’t know whether the journalism school runs separate merit money, but it is given to B students. (second child m2ck)

The OP can do a Google search for Gateway scholarships to get a chart for grades and scores.

Thank you guys so much!
I have been (in fact am still) visiting the campus. I took a summer workshop at scripps and really enjoyed it. Your right, the campus is beautiful and I do like to party but i’m not sure about the rural area.

I haven’t taken my act or sat yet but im a really good test taker so im not worried about them being low. The reason I don’t think i’d get into UF is because I really messed up in freshman and sophomore year so I spent most of my junior year recovering my gpa which os a 2.6 now. This unfortunately left me with little time to do much else so i’m not looking that well rounded.

Anyways I really appreciate everyones input!
