Question

I really screwed up in high school. I didn't bother with doing the work, started missing a lot of classes. It wasn't that I couldn't do the work - it is that I didn't see the point and had no interest in it. Mostly this was because I had no objective. However, I now have my G.E.D. and will be taking community college courses. My G.E.D. scores were: Language Arts Writing, 790; Social Studies, 780; Science, 780; Language Arts Reading, 800; and Mathematics, 700. I will be taking the SAT sometime soon, but based on the practice tests I have taken, I figure I will get something along the lines of the following: Critical Reading, 760; Mathematics, 700; and I am assuming it will be fairly high for writing.

Anyways, the point of this post is, I have a very strong desire to serve in the United States Coast Guard as an Officer. I know that I really screwed up in high school, and then screwed up in dropping out. However, I am fixing it to the best of my ability by going to community college, and I have started volunteering a lot. My question is, do I stand any chance of getting admitted to the Coast Guard Academy after a year or two of community college?

Not knowing any of your other qualifications, it’s hard to say…but in general if you do very well in community college, taking tough courses in calculus, chemistry, physics etc. you should have a decent shot. I know of kids who have taken that route. You of course need to be in good shape and show leadership traits. Post some more info on yourself and good luck to you!

Does the Coast Guard Academy have a prep school like the other academies? Would that be an option?

Yes it has a program called Coast Guard Academy Scholars(CGAS) which sends candidates to one of two prep schools. You can learn more about it at the web site [United States Coast Guard Academy](http://www.cga.edu)
