Chances of The Coast Guard Academy?

While making my schedule for next year, my senior year of high school, I mentioned to my counselor that CGA was my top choice. She then went on to say that it would nearly be impossible for me to get into the school which really lowered my self confidence in attending the school. I have a 90 GPA, will have taken five AP’s and three honors classes by the time I graduate, I scored an 1820 on the old SAT, I played JV basketball for two years and now hold a state record for weightlifting, have hours of community service at a variety of different locations, and I’ve also attended Georgetown and the United Nations for law/poly-science related programs. I consider myself to be a fairly strong candidate for the Academy as a female aspiring to be a government major at the college. Is my counselor right, is what I’ve done not enough? How can I make myself a stronger applicant? Thank you so much in advance for all of your advice!!

Hello, I will be attending CGA next year with the Class of 2020 and I will also be a government major. The best advice I can give you is to take the hardest classes you can for your senior year and take SATs a few more times to try to raise your score as much as possible. Everything you have said leads me to believe that you are a strong candidate and I wouldn’t worry much about what your counselor said! During my sophomore year of high school my counselor said something similar to that about how my chances of getting in weren’t high. I ignored her and applied Early Action to the Academy and got in. Another suggestion I have would be to apply for AIM and go to that this summer if you can. Going to AIM and adding that to your application could help you increase your chances, although it does not guarantee anything. Hope that helps!
