Hi. I am a sophomore at Las Positas Community College, and I am majoring in psychology. Recently, a professor from my university informed me of the future troubles that I may encounter with a psychology major -- namely, not being able to do much with it. She suggested that I do some research pertaining to available career options with a psychology degree. Well, I did just that, and I was more than intrigued by neuropsychology. I am so much more happier with myself and school ever since I switched my major to psychology, and I would really like to continue with it. I was just wondering if anyone could offer me more information about neuropsychology and the different careers and options within the field. Also, which classes would be the most beneficial to an undergraduate interested in neuropsychology? If not, is there a better minor that I could look into pursuing? I apologize for any redundancy in my questions, but I would be most appreciative of any response that my post will generate.

First, when you say “neuropsychology” What comes to mind is “clinical neuropsychology” which largely involves assessment of brain damage using test batteries such as the Halsted-Reitan. So, is this what you mean? Or, do you mean, cognitive- or behavioral-neuroscience?
Second, whether you mean clinical neuropsychology or neuroscience, job prospects are limited without a graduate degree, generally at the doctoral-level. Relevant supporting coursework includes neurosciences, of course, plus at least core courses in underlying basic sciences, including biology, chemistry, and physics.
Third, at the master’s level, it might be good prep for certain areas of rehab psych, special ed, occupational therapy, or communication disorders. In that case, you would need to focus less on basic sciences and neuroscience.

For undergrad you should really look into doing a cognitive science major at one of the UCs. It blends neuroscience, psychology, biology, math, computer science, philosophy, and linguistics. In my opinion, it’s a fascinating major and one that will prep you well for graduate programs in the area of neuroscience.

I was also interested in neuropsychology and I know University of Miami has it as a major and Florida Atlantic University (except it’s called psychobiology). I asked a few deans at the school originally for myself and they gave me some good insight.

For one, it’s main focal point is the biological interaction of psychology, and it’s relationship to the different parts of the brain (hippocampus, brocas area, etc.). This degree will mostly be beneficial for researching and teaching careers, and can be combined with a masters in Neuroscience or biology and psychology.

Hope this helps!
