Questions about admission into UT.

Hey there everybody.
My name's Tony, I'm currently a freshman in Pflugerville high school.

I have HUGE aspirations for myself in life, and UT has definately been my biggest dream.
I've always wanted to attend, and before my dad died he always had wished to see me attend too.
That's all irrelivant, though. Here's my real problem.

So UT has an okay Aerospace/Aeronautics program.
It's not the best in the country, but it's still pretty high ranked.
I'm hoping to become an Aeronautical Engineer when I'm older (After getting a masters or PhD, depending.)

Right now I have an awful GPA.
I'm just coming into high school, the first 6 weeks I acheived about a 3.7 GPA, but the 2nd six weeks I slacked off for a reason I couldn't really conlclude, and got about a 2.0 GPA (Failed 3 classes with D's, got 4 A's.)

I've been in Pre AP classes my WHOLE life, and starting next year I'll be in all AP throughout the rest of my school career.

I heard you need to be in the top 10% of your class to get into UT.
So, I was wondering this. When they say you need to be in the top 10%, do they mean top 10% for ALL years? Or do they look at some specific year?

I know I can get top 10%, but I slacked off badly last 6 weeks, and I must get into UT.
Can anyone tell me if I still have a shot, or did I mess it all up with that one little slack off mistake?

Edit:
Also, if anyone may be kind enough to tell me any information about Admission to colleges at all, my eyes are open. Thanks everyone!

Your class rank is based on all of your semester (not 6-weeks) grades from grade 9, 10 & 11. UT is changing top 10% to top 8%. You still have time to bring your semester grades up, but I assure you D’s aren’t gunna cut it. A lot of people regret that they didn’t bother to make good grades in 9th (and 10th) and then it is too late. Don’t let that happen to you.

For this year, you need to graduate in the top 10% of a Texas high school to be automatically admitted. For the following year, 8%.

Not everyone admitted is from the top 10% of a Texas high school. UT also admits international students, out of state students, and Texas students who were not highly ranked.

You can get general ideas on how college search, selection, and admission works by reading “College Planning for Dummies”

This book popped up when I did a search, too. It looks like something you might like.

If you really want to be a Longhorn and don’t get in freshman year, you should be able to be part of the Coordinated Admission Program and to go another UT for one year and transfer into the big UT for your second year.

Most colleges make admissions decisions based on your 6th semester class rank (end of your Jr year) In addition to the top 10% / 8% for auto admission to UT, Aerospace is a restricted major -so even if you are accepted into UT, you are not guaranteed admission to an Engineering major. Since you are local, you might want to take advantage of some of the outreach programs offered by UT. Explore UT is a fun event [Explore UT](<a href=“University Events | What Starts Here Changes the World”>University Events | What Starts Here Changes the World) . You can also go to a prospective student visit and contact the department to request information. They’ll be glad to let you know what high school courses will best prepare you. Also, UT’s Aerospace program isn’t just okay-it is consistently ranked among the top 10 programs in the nation. [Engineering undergraduate programs rank among nation’s elite - Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin](<a href=“Custom 404 page”>Custom 404 page)

Number 8 ranked in the nation and it is just an OK school for Aerospace Engineering?

if youre not in top 10%, UT will look at your SATS and ACTS, and if youre as smart as you say you are, then that should get you an acceptance, even with a bad gpa/rank

oh wait, youre a freshman. disregard my previous post. you still have a whole 3 years to go to make up for your bad grades this six weeks. just work really hard for your next few years and also do well on your SATs and ACTs

Thanks for all the answers.
Helped me a lot.

Also, I wasn’t aware UT was ranked 8 in Aeronautics/Aerospace.

My mothers friend is an Aeronautical Engineer, and he told me that UT’s program wasn’t all that great compared to others.
I’ll work harder, I’m going to give it my all to work for these next 4 years and get into that College!

-Tony

That 8 ranking is from this year’s US News Graduate department rankings. The undergrad ranking only go to 5. The lists correspond pretty closely however.

Good luck!

I have one more question.
Let’s say I do bad this whole year, just my freshman year.
(Bad being straight C’s)
And somehow I get all A’s for the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year; as well as good test scores.
Do you think that would still allow admission? Or would I be done with chances at UT?

If you are not in the top 10% of a Texas high school graduating class, UT uses a holistic system that looks at your AI and PAI as follows. (This applies to all out of state and international applicants.)

If your grades when you are applying after fall of senior year of high school show 5 semesters of A’s and 2 semesters of C’s, your GPA would be almost a 3.5, so yes, if your test scores and the other parts of your application are good, you’d still have a chance. (I wouldn’t recommend this!)

Just remember, by the time you apply, UT will only be automatically admitting the top 8%, and even that could change in the next few years before you apply. So if you want to be guaranteed a spot, you really should be getting next to perfect grades and taking the most challenging courses available at your school to beef up your app should you miss the required rank.
