Would I be able to get into UT-Austin?

I am a senior at a small high school in Texas but not even in the top 10% currently. As you should know, UT has a rule that gives automatic admission to those in the top 10% of their class. I heard it was pretty hard to get in if you weren't in the top 10%. 85% of their freshman students get in under that rule.

I have Asian/Pacific Islander heritage and want to get into engineering. Do they take into account your heritage?

I have taken all of the Pre-AP and AP classes at my school and have done okay in them. My class rank is 11 out of 82 meaning I am not too far from being in the top 10%. However, even by the end of this semester I don't think I will be in the top 10%. I may be able to gain a couple of ranks but that's it. I've had great grades in senior year so far in my core classes especially AP Calculus AB, AP Physics, and AP English IV. My GPA right now is 94.3333 out of 100 but will hopefully rise a bit by the end of the semester.

I have participated in the UIL Academic Competition and have advanced to the State Level and performed well as an Individual and my Team. This year I am hoping to win Class 2A state in 2 different subject areas, one with my team and one as an individual. That will occur in the spring semester though.

I have had one summer job last summer working for my parents at our motel. I have started tutoring a few students at my school this year in Math. I am on my school's "Distinguished" graduation plan meaning I have to take a 3rd foreign language course, and I have to say, Spanish 3 is also going very well for me so far.

I don't feel completely comfortable giving all this info out but I need to know whatever it takes to get into UT Austin. I definitely want to get into their School of Engineering but they have a different criteria for admission which makes it a lot more competitive, for example you must take a SAT Subject Math test and they only open 75% of their spots for automatic admits, making those decisions for the top 1% first, top 2%, so on. The rest of their spots they decide by the holistic review process.

If I don't get into their engineering school but get accepted into General Studies will I be able to transfer into engineering after I attend?

But let's not get too ahead, here. My highest SAT score is 2030, achieved on my latest attempt, with a 670 Math, 620 CR, and 740 Writing. I have taken the SAT 4 times, with the first 2 times taken like 2 years ago but they are still on my record. I am planning on taking the SAT again in November so that I can get at least a 1300 combined in Math and CR so that I can at least get automatically accepted into Texas A&M (obviously I just barely missed it on my last SAT).

So, what do you think? I obviously want to attend their school of engineering but I understand it's extremely competitive. Will I at least be able to get in with another major?

bumpety bump

To be safe, I’d try another major. Just saying this from experience, my brother was ranked 82 out of 590 and he had a 2190 SAT. He applied to McCombs and did not get in (decent extracurriculars, he too went to state UIL in the 5A division). This was last year. I’m not saying you don’t have a shot, because you do. But if you want to be safe try General Studies or a less competitive major and transfer in. And all colleges, even if they say they don’t, do consider ethnicity. And being Asian/Pacific Islander is definitely a negative. But on a more positive note, you do have a shot - not a great one but it’s definitely there. Good Luck!

Thank you. Bump?

bump please
