Questions about Brown Application

1) Can I type all the forms? I think it says something about handwriting Form 1 but does that apply to all of them?

2) I don’t understand how to format my extracurriculars for Form 2. In a list? Should I attach a list like I do for the Common App?

I think this thread could be used for questions on the Brown Application. Maybe it’s just me, but I think some parts of it are a little confusing :)

What are the essays?

They're on the forms on the website.

There's a "tell us about yourself," a "why did you decide to go to brown" and about 4 questions for those majoring in chemistry, engineerings, computer science or physics

Read the directions. Use common sense. If you can't do those two things you probably don't belong at Brown anyway. And it's not form 2 the activities is on. I'm just frustrated with with people who can't make judgment calls on their own lately.

I haven't looked at the application yet and I figured a kind brown applicant could quickly fill me in.

Not a problem...I was waiting for the application to come in, so I can answer your questions. The essays have been the same apparently for a while

A short essay on who told you about the school

They want a list or some kind of description on the activities and other life changing things that you have been a part of in order of importance

The next essay is the whole "we want to get to know you...tell us something that isn't really emphasized on your app that you enjoy"

final one is why you want to be there and what areas interest you

I wish you the best of luck!

sigh......

Thanks, I appreciate it. Best of luck to you as well.

and renix, I'm sorry my question bothered you. You're right, I should be more independent. But hey, it's just a webboard. Let's keep this friendly.

Sorry, I meant Form 3.

Ok, let me rephrase:

Read the directions. Use common sense. :)

sigh.... :)

Better?

Form 1: "This form will be scanned by an optional scanner. If completed by hand: Use a black ball point pen only, and do not type." If you're not supposed to type, then why do they say "IF completed by hand" as if there was another option?

Form 3: Doesn't describe format.

If you want to be helpful, then that's great. If not, I'd prefer you didn't judge so harshly. It's an open forum. Lots of people pose what can be described as stupid questions but that's the point of this website: to get even stupid questions answered.

Triple sigh. The following is a copy/paste from the PDF version of form 3

No no no, for the extracurricular list question. Question 4. "Please tell us, roughly in order of their importance to you and in the space provided, those individual activities and awards which you believe best represent your greatest acheivements and interests. Tell us approximately how many hours per week each activity entails."

Try to do the format of the activity list on Common Application on the lines? So each line or two would have one activity with name on left, yrs participated, hrs pr week/wks per yr & position with description ?

Nevermind..I'll ask a friend.

Or you could type it out for convenience of the admissions officers. I did.

CP-- you can do whatever you want for formatting. Present the information and present yourself.

They're not throwing out your application because your activities list didn't look the way they want, formatting wise.

I had a CV styled document that I send to all schools including Brown for that question all styled how I wanted to present the information. Some high schools/guidance counselors require you to create on in a certain form at some point.

Whatever you have, they'll be able to get the information from it.

Can someone explain the format of the test score section? The example shows one way to do it, but it then says to report SAT scores of different sections separately..

On the online version, it suggests to enter it this way: V800,M800,W800 - V being for critical reading. By doing it this way, you now have more lines available to report your SAT reasoning scores if you took it more than once, and also for your subject tests.

what about the ACT? E,M,R, and S?

This is from the online application form (scores section); it does not address the ACT sections, so it may be best if you contacted Adcoms.

List SAT Reasoning Tests, SAT Subject Tests, or ACT Tests taken, scores received, and dates (also include tests you plan to take and when).

SAT Reasoning Test:Verbal, math and writing scores should be listed separately.
(Known as Critical Reading as of March, 2005)

SAT Subject Test:Subjects and scores should be listed by test date. You may use abbreviations for the Subject Test.

I started the online application Part I. I don't see the link to application Part II. Should you submit the Part I before you can fill-in the Part II?
