Hi, I'm applying to Pratt RD and I had a couple of questions:

1) Is Duke's BME harder to get into other Engineering programs at Pratt? Do they accept to Pratt or BME at Pratt?
2) In my essay, is it okay if I mention how I have done research at 2 other universities for the past two years and how it motivated me to continue doing research even though I'm applying for engineering?
3) One of the optional essays says to describe the research you've done, since I currently do research at 2 different universities can I talk about both (Spent 180 hours on one and 70 on the other)?
4) How easy is it to secure a undergrad research opportunity with a prof at Pratt?

Kind of random question, but after reading Jimmy's post on the other thread I am kind of worried. Will a 3.7UW GPA (Class rank is 19/538) keep me from being competitive at Pratt? (3.67 in 9th, 3.67 in 10th, 3.74 in 11th, 4.0 in 12th/have taken the hardest cirriculum in my grade will graduate with 9 APs and 12 AP exam scores).

1) You are accepted to Pratt, not to the BME department.
2) Do mention that. Previous research experience is rare for an incoming freshman. It also shows your passion for engineering.
3) Do talk about both. You’ve spent considerable amount of time on them and they’re a large part of your resume.
4) It depends on the professor. You can start as early as your freshman year by cold e-mailing them. Many won’t reply, but all you need is one to take you into their lab. With prior experience, you’ll have an advantage over even upperclassmen. Beyond that, in your Junior year you can apply to the Pratt Undergraduate Research Fellowship. Read more about it at [Engineering at Duke University, Pratt School](http://www.pratt.duke.edu) under “undergraduate, research opportunity”.

Your GPA shows an improvement as you went along, and that’s a good thing. It’s a tad weak, to be honest, but your research experience can more than balance it out. They’re looking for more than just strong stats, they’re looking for students who can contribute to the university.

Thanks. I’m only asking because I have heard that colleges think that students with good standardized test scores (I have 34 ACT, 10 essay, 780 Chem, 800 Math 2) and with kind of low GPA are lazy/slackers. And I don’t want to come off as a lazy person because I am the opposite of that.

On a side note, I’m upset there is no ChemE :(

@WongTongTong: How long is your required essay? I think that I have one that is WAY too long. Part of the problem I guess is that I mentioned research and tied it into why I want to go to Duke, and that made it quite lengtyh. I’m also applying to Pratt RD for BME! Good luck!

I didn’t finish it yet. good luck to you as well

Alright, thanks! I’ll just go with what I have.

I didn’t finish yet, but right now it is about 500 words.

How many words is yours?
