Duke Engineering

Do I have a shot for applying BME to Duke?

Stats:
- GPA: my school has a weird scaling system and it's a tough independent school, so it would be around 3.6-3.7, with a huge upscale each year. This semester I have a 4.2 GPA

ACT score: 31

SAT II scores: Math I: 730; Chem: 730

Extracurriculars: Founder and President of FBLA since Junior year; President of Maroon Stock Exchange Club; President of Sports Writing Club; Part of Key Club since frosh year; leader in Community Service Board; Was part of the most prestigious high school choir from frosh to junior year; Model UN since freshman year; Model Congress since Junior Year; Had an internship with a hedge fund on wall street Freshman year; last year had an internship in Columbia University; was top 5 in a national stock game (turned $100,000 to $250,000 in a quarter of a year)

Do I have a good chance for getting in? What are my pros and cons?

I would say it’s a reach. Possible, but not likely. Your 31 ACT puts you below the 25th percentile of Pratt (which is 33) and your 730 math is also below the 25th percentile (750).

And hard to say if your GPA is solid or not (do you have a class rank?), but I’d imagine 3.6-3.7 is on the low side as well. Certainly, might as well give it a try and don’t give up, but unless you have an amazing hook or side-story, I’m thinking it’s not likely. Sorry for the bluntness, but I assume you want our truthful opinions. Again, nobody knows for sure as the admissions committee is the one who decides and sometimes decisions aren’t very predictable. Good luck!
