1) Are there any areas that should be avoided?

2) Is the area any bit bike friendly? I understand that there are bike lanes in the area but how do drivers generally respond to cyclists I.E. are they generally regarded as just another vehicle or are they negatively viewed as an annoyance?

3) How bicycle accesible are the areas frequented by BU students outside of campus?

4) While most students are instate, what area of NY do mosty hale from?

5) Asides from on campus research opportunities, are there any science research opportunities open to undergraduates outside BU?

1) Yes, there are some areas of downtown Binghamton (the city) that are not great and I wouldn’t recommend wandering there alone at night. It’s mostly north and east that aren’t as nice. The southeast sections are wealthier.
2) Not sure what a bit bike is. I would be cautious biking around… Don’t do it at night unless you make sure you are visible. Also, you won’t be biking for a good 6 month period. The weather isn’t great (it’s upstate NY).
3) You can bike (not saying it’s safe to do so, but it’s definitely possible) to most of the areas on Vestal Parkway (major road outside of campus). You cannot bike easily to the city of Binghamton. Most people take the bus.
4) Most are from the NYC area (NYC, Long Island, Westchester) but I’ve heard it’s not as skewed towards that population as it once was. I’m from Long Island.
5) There are local area hospitals, some local companies that do engineering work, plenty of biological/ecological opportunity if you want to study upstate NY ecology, there is a local observatory… Not sure what you want to study. Campus will be your best bet no matter what though.

I personally don’t travel around the city very much, so I can’t really answer this question. I know that the areas that typically house students and where students typically hang-out are very safe. Binghamton is ranked first in safety for cities of its size, so it’s a generally safe area.

You can bike anywhere in the university very easily. There are no bike lanes, but the speed limit is rather low (25 MPH) in the university and there are bike racks outside of most academic buildings to accommodate bikers. I regularly see people biking to class.

The city of Binghamton would be difficult to bike to, as you would be traveling by highway at least part of the way. Vestal Parkway could be biked on, and I’ve seen a few people do it, but it’s a very busy road. I would say that it depends heavily on how experienced a biker you are. I wouldn’t recommend the road unless you have experience biking in heavy traffic. The actual university is very bike-friendly.

Around half of our students are in-state. They come from all areas of the state and percentage-wise, we receive percentages of students from each region very close to the percentages of state population in each region. That leaves the feel of having a lot of downstate students, as there is a lot of the state’s population in the downstate area, but we have a lot of upstate students as well. Around 18% of our students are international and the remaining 30ish% are out-of-state.

Definitely. The college is connected with the area hospitals as well as Upstate Medical, one of the most prominent hospitals in Upstate New York. IBM was founded right in Binghamton and we maintain close connections with that company as well. This is by no means an exhaustive list of our research and internship opportunities - our Career Development Center works with around 900 employers in some capacity each year. These are employers coming to our university because they want specifically our students to fill their job and internship openings.

j814wong: The weather varies and it’s kind of hard to explain because it depends entirely on what your “normal” for weather is back home. I personally found that there is a lot more sun in Binghamton than I’m used to, but I also come from the Syracuse area which is known for having very, very little sun. I know a lot of students from down-state consider the area to be rainier than what they’re used to.

We’ve had a pretty cold winter this year, and it’s been cold from the end of February to now. It’s supposed to start getting into “Spring” weather next week. We typically get precipitation maybe once or twice a week, but often not for an extended period of time. In the fall, it wasn’t unusual to wake up to the ground being wet from a brief period of rain overnight but a perfectly sunny day ahead. When it does rain for an extended period of time, it tends to rain very heavily, but that’s fairly rare. I recall it happening only a handful of times this year so far.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi
I am a new student ,Iranian and a new USA permanent resident .Since we are coming to USA in July with my husband who is a mechanical engineer I am really worried about choosing our first destination. I have also been admitted to Kent State University, two only PHD program in Translation Studies in USA .That is why I really need your comments on the following questions which will help me to decide :

1- Does Binghamton Uni offer any housing inside the university for married couple? I saw some apartments recommended in Uni website which were around university but mostly were suitable for single student and the smallest suites were so expensive. Where do u recommend for settlement? which condo? which part of city?

2- Are there any job opportunities for those who are not students in the city or near that? especially engineering jobs? or what else ? where?

3- Are there any Iranian Student association there? I have seen their link in the web but the website is down? Or any Iranian Student I may be connected to know about this society there?

I would appreciate any other comment you think may help me to know more about foreigner’s life in Binghamton
