I have two questions about my family's education levels that I have to write down.

Firstly, my parents were educated in Mexico and received a college education there, but when they moved to the United States, their degrees in Finances and Accounting were rendered moot. So in the US my dad is a truck driver, which just required a GED (Which he earned here, I believe.) Do I write them down as "college educated" on the FAFSA?

Also, it asked "How many people in your parents' household will be college students between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013?" My sister is going to be taking like, 1 college course at a community college, and even then she's only doing it to keep debt collectors away for some loans she took out. Does she count as a college student?

At the “end of the day” you will need to verify that your sister is attending college as full time status (12 credits or more). If she is only taking one course, I do not think she meets the requirement for “attending college”.

Also, FYI to your sister…her loan folks might see it the same way. College loans are usually deferred ONLY if a student is taking 12 credits or MORE. She needs to find out if this is the case…it almost always is…

I think college loans can be deferred if they are going half time- but that would be at least 6 credits.

If she is going at least half time- she would still count IMO.

If your parents have a degree- then they have a degree.
However it seems there would be another place on your application ) just not on FAFSA ?) to indicate their immigrant status.
