Questions about life at UCSC? ASK HERE :)

@Jw0406: I asked my friend, and she said around 2 hours on most weekdays and then events on the weekends that can take some time.

@fumeser: No. No no. I’m fairly sure they’re not allowed because they are a heating element with a high fire risk. Same reason they don’t allow a lot of cooking appliances.

@JulieJuu: They recommend high-efficiency liquid soap, but powder is fine too.

so den how do you go abt wrinkled clothing ?^

Does Housing “inspect” dorm rooms often? Or do they let you know prior to each inspection? Or is it just based on suspicion?

I’m bringing an Electric Kettle.

@fumeser: I’ve always had clothing that doesn’t wrinkle easily, so I can’t speak about that. But there are a lot of “wrinkle removing” sprays I’ve heard about.

@Snowbee: The only time they inspect dorm rooms is if there is reasonable cause. Like someone reported you, or a CSO passed by and smelled pot. :stuck_out_tongue: I don’t think they let you know.

They actually allow irons. The only thing is after a week or two, you will realize that you may not really have time/you’ll become too lazy to iron.

Also one big hint is if a CSO or anyone knocks on your door, don’t open it all the way. You can always tell them that you don’t want them in your room and they have to follow that. One CSO knocked on my friends room because they were too loud and he then got in trouble cause the CSO saw he had an electric stove in the room.

oh okay, thank you! How big of a trouble can you get for having an electric kettle/stove? Is it just a verbal warning or… goes on permanent records or something

The likelihood of a fire using mine is close to ZERO if you have common sense (i.e. not leaving it on unattended, leaving it too close to other items, etc). x.x It’s no different from a microwave, honestly. Kind of like this: http://img.diytrade.com/cdimg/622352/5847804/0/1210406706/Electric_Kettle_Hot_water_Pot_Stainless_steel_kettle.jpg</a> - Except, it’s pot-shaped (fanned out with a lid on top); on & off switch though it turns off by itself automatically once the water is boiled

Is a refrigerator about 3-4 ft high too large? My parents didn’t want me to buy a SMALL one cause it’d barely be of any use to my roommate and I to share. So i bought a 4.5 cubic sq ft one

How does work study work?

What information does this application require? I want to be ready the minute the applications and job listings are open.

Is it generally “first come, first serve” or is there an application process with an interview?

^ Mm, I don’t think you can create an application until September 7, 2010 for new/transfer students.

The HE washers recommend against powder, actually. I would only use liquid (and HE at that so you don’t “oversoap” the machine by accident, so to speak). It was posted either on the machine or above them about this. I can’t remember exactly and I already left campus a few days ago so I can’t go check.

As for not allowing a CSO into the room, I do remember language in the housing contract that they can come in regardless as long as there is reason to be suspicious. I had a “fun” wake up call in the middle of the night this summer because someone was smoking marijuana in the building. There was no question that my room had to be inspected despite the fact I was obviously having difficulty breathing (marijuana allergy). Refusal would have made me suspicious.

For a sound complaint, though, it is probably more easy to get away with not opening the door all the way and simply turning down the music. Just don’t make it too obvious you’re not opening the door so that the CSO can’t see inside :P. Or better yet, don’t keep illegal and/or banned items in sight of the door if you’re going to take the risk to have them. Also, don’t let loud noises happen with you not present because a CSO can and will enter your room if you are not there to answer it so that they can turn the noise off.

If it’s things like marijuana, even barely opening your door will probably get you caught. However, they really do need legitimate “suspicion.”

One day we were playing beer pong in our dorm and a CSO came knocking because we were a little loud. He tried to peek in a bit more (we basically moved all of our stuff to the side before answering the door) and asked what’s going on in there. I said we were just hanging out and that we would keep it down. He saw a bag of red cups in my roommates shelf and asked if we were drinking. I just looked at him and said, “Those are just empty cups. We are college students, we don’t want to wash dishes.” I told him sorry about the noise and closed the door. Simple.

Be nice to CSOs, don’t give them information to work with, and just cooperate. They have let plenty of drunk people go by without writing them up if they cooperate or don’t act suspicious. Also it doesn’t hurt to know what hours they “patrol” ;)

The gray area there is what constitutes as valid suspicion. I’m glad you had an intelligent CSO who seemed to know that the presence of red cups does not always equal alcohol and thus could not be used as a suspicion to force inspection. If they did, a cop could pull my mom over every morning since she uses them for cereal while driving to work (much easier and safer than a bowl). Anywho, it also helps that your friends and yourself were smart enough to push things out of view before opening the door. Not everyone is smart (or sober as the case might be) enough to do that.

Unfortunately, though, if there was any other indication such as someone appearing to be intoxicated or the smell of alcohol, that could potentially be used to justify entry. Or, in the case of cooking, the smell of that as well. There’s definitely a very distinct smell between items cooked in a microwave and items cooked in a toaster oven. And the powers that be forbid you accidentally burn anything.

I definitely agree, though. Be nice to the CSOs, cooperate, and don’t act stupid if you’re going to break the rules. It’s your own fault if you get caught. I eye my toaster oven every time I’m home wishing I could bring it down, but I’d rather not risk being caught. It’s not worth it to me, but I can understand how such things would be worth it to others.

My experience with the CSOs has been completely positive so far (the rare times I have actually encountered them, that is). Even the one who woke me up in the middle of the night was very kind. However, I also cooperated by letting my room be inspected (quick look around and a sniff test). He did seem slightly annoyed when I first opened my door, but visibly softened when I did what he asked.

Thanks Kender & MidnightGolfer! Alchohol/Drugs won’t be a problem for me, it’s just I want the small electric kettle for coffee and snacks (i.e. ramen). I hope the smell of those isn’t too much for them to think I’m cooking in my dorm room haha.

So to clarify: We need to bring our OWN washer soap?

And as for the iron: it’s fine to bring it, just impractical?

^
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing about irons. Does anyone iron their clothes in college?

@PlantomBMAN: Yeah, we bring our own.

@ProteinMan: I read earlier, that most students get lazy with ironing their clothes so the iron proves to be useless. Do you iron your clothing at home? Is it a necessity, really?

Does anyone know how financial aid disbursement works? I won two scholarships (which the checks is sent from my High School, directly to UCSC Financial Aid office); how will I know if UCSC received it or not? The deadline is coming up soon…

Has anybody checked their “To Do List”, do we have to agree to “Grant Permission to Pay”?

Hmm, that’s not on my “To Do List” but I think you have to. Isn’t it the thing where you grant UCSC permission to pay dues with the financial aid?

You dont HAVE to, but its recommended. The permissions allow UCSC to take whatever money they need to pay for miscellaneous expenses you have. Its basically so that you dont have to have a headache and worry about whether all of your fees are paid or not.

Ex. Some classes require fees. If you grant permission, UCSC will automatically take money out of your financial aid etc to pay for it without you needing to worry.

I’m going to apply to UCSC in about a month, and its currently my top choice for schools. I really really REALLY want to get in, but i’m worried about my chances.

I have about a 3.3 hs gpa (i really screwed up as a sophomore because my parents were divorcing)

I’ve been in Honors English all four years of hs- I consider myself a fairly good writer.

I’m currently enrolled in 3 AP Courses as a senior - AP Literature, AP Language & AP Studio Art Drawing.

My only real EC’s are swim team and girls water polo-
everything else is just art, photography & writing in my spare time.

Honestly, I don’t have very much volunteer work at all, just surviving ALOT family drama and overcoming personal obstacles (depression & an eating disorder) was my main focus. Along with helping others with similar issues.

There is an obvious alteration between my sophomore and junior years. I went from a being 3.0 student to a 3.8 student, basically. Junior year is when I started to really get my act together. Now as a senior I will likely be getting a 4.1 GPA… but nothing from senior year will be reported until the app is already in…

So basically, my questions are:

 1. What are my chances at getting in?

2) How can I improve my chances with only a month before I submit my app?

Also, I am attending a Fall Preview Day on October 23… I want to visit each college so that I can try and get a feel for them. I’m currently drawn to c19 particularly 9, but I was wondering if we get to visit each college during the preview or if its only at one?
