You’d also save around $60k (give or take) by going to a CC first.

California CC transfers receive priority when it comes to transferring. Also, with a CC –> UC transfer you would not have to worry about the unit cap like you would with a UC –> UC transfer. You would be better off doing the CC –> UC route. But yes, UC –> UC does happen.

Do most of the students generally become bitter around the holidays or something? I went to check out the campus today, and everyone seemed frustrated, upset, and in some cases downright angry. Perhaps it was all in my imagination.

Avoidant: We’re coming up on the end of the quarter. Some classes are still having midterms and others are already preparing their finals. There’s also been a proposed fee increase along with class registration opening up (classes fill up fast and are limited in offerings). Add to that, you visited on a Sunday when the weekend was ending and classes for the week were about to begin again ;). All of those combined can make for some fairly “bitter… frustrated, upset… and downright angry” people.

Although you must not have met many people on campus if that was the impression you got. I generally only see very tired people right now. Very few people I have run into have the attitude you described. I’m not saying you didn’t see these people, but I am suggesting that it is possible you misinterpreted tiredness for the other negative motions you described. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience, though :(

Ah, that makes perfect sense then. I thought that something must have been up. Thanks for your reply.

I hope it’s okay if I bump this up to the first page, a lot of recently accepted students could benefit from this topic.

Transfers don’t find out until tonight starting at 12 am only freshman have found out.

Transfers don’t find out til 12 am tonight on a rolling basis only freshmen have found out

I wasn’t saying that ALL students have found out. But now this topic is here for them as the acceptances keep rolling in.

hey I had a few questions:

Can someone describe the different colleges to me, in terms of what type of person would best fit into each college?

Are there any public pools? I’m a certified lifeguard/Swim Instructor and I want to know if there’s a chance i could get a job nearby.

hey are the colleges based on a first come first serve basis? i just turned mine in what are the chances ill get into my top 2? thnx they are porter-kresge-cowell-stevenson-8

^No, it’s not first come first serve. Chances are very good that you’ll get into your top 3 though.
If you wanted my opinion, I’d say you’re most likely to get into Kresge. But don’t take my word for it, haha.

I’ve heard Kresge is the least likely of those 3. A lot of students aren’t able to live there their second year because of the limited space.

^Yeah, but they’re definitely not accepting as many freshman into Porter as they used to. And (this might have changed in the past year or so) Cowell always seems to have a lot of people applying there. But I’m not exactly an authority on the subject, so I could have it completely wrong.

thnx guys, i think ill do fine in kresge.
what are the rules on glass (water pipes etc) cause i have a few expensive pieces im not going to part with. If i keep em clean with no resin in them do you think it should be ok because they are legal.

Wait, so if it’s not first come first serve, how does the process of housing work?

rectangleshorts:
I wonder if they’re also going to keep the transfer Porter affiliations low to almost non-existant like they did this past year. Joe sent out that housing email that said even those of us without a housing guarantee would have space available to us if we chose to live on campus. I was a little surprised by this considering how limited our space has become because of the TC. Maybe this is their way to make it up to us who have to suffer through giving up our space to affiliates from the nine other colleges? Limit our affiliates, but by doing so they’ll be able to offer us housing?

I wonder if Kresge is going to start limiting even more because of Redwood Grove too…

Oh, and did you see there’s no University Inn for next year? I wasn’t planning on it, but I find it hard to believe we truly have enough space without it. Also the rate saver is back again for us continuing. 2010-2011 rates, of course, and still only if you choose to dorm instead of go to the apartments, but nice to see it return. I wish I could keep my 2009-2010 rates I’m paying right now, though.

shmow52:
This from Porter’s residential policies specifically, but this particular rule can be found at all colleges. It is a campus wide rule.

[Residential Policies](<a href=“Residential Policies”>Residential Policies)

So no, they are not legal on campus. It’s your choice if you still decide to bring them, but if they are that valuable to you, I would not take the risk.

skinnykittee:
College affiliation and getting housing are horses of different colors. They are two separate things to deal with. Your affiliation is not first come, first served and is just based on how things fall with what others requested for affiliations and what space is available at each college. Housing is based on a point system (college affiliation*, class standing, etc) as long as you filed by the priority housing deadline (this is different for new students and continuing students). Housing application will be available at a later time.

*This only applies if you are choosing to live in one of the ten colleges. If you choose your own, you get additional points. If you choose another one, you do not get a point advantage. This is the hiccup that many transfers this year in the TC did not realize is that while they can live in Porter next year, they will have lower priority than incoming freshman Porter affiliates if said transfers are not Porter affiliates themselves.

@Kender
Honestly, I’ve had enough of Porter housing. I’m definitely not returning to on-campus housing next year. They sent out a similar email last year, saying that there was plenty of room for all people who filed their applications within the specific period, and then didn’t offer housing to everyone. In the end, I got a spot in the apartments (not without it’s own drama), so I really can’t complain too much. But the whole deal with the transfer community on top of that has really made me lose whatever respect I had left for the people in charge of housing.
I’m paying way too much money to have such ****ty quality housing. I feel disrespected as a Porter student. And yes, I’m bitter. Not only did I have to endure the construction of the A building last year, but to not even be allowed in now? Screw that.

Sorry to rant/complain, but it’s just annoying how much the university has screwed over Porter affiliates in the past year. Off campus it is.

Oh and as for that whole Kresge thing, I don’t think they’re in much need of reducing their students. A few of their apartment buildings were supposed to be Porter’s anyway, so I feel like that balances out losing the Redwood Grove.
Plus, I know a few people that are Porter affiliates that got housing in Kresge this year–so they can’t be THAT overcrowded, can they? There’s only 3 floors of freshmen at Porter. I definitely think that Kresge has more room for incoming students.

rectangleshorts:
I know you’ve seen my posts and know that I completely agree with much of what you said. We are very disrespected as Porter affiliates. It’s revolting what they’ve done to us. I feel I’ve even been disrespected as a transfer because all the transfer student activities are now only for “new transfers.”

Unfortunately, I do need Porter housing because of at least one more 20 unit quarter and late nights with the theatre arts department. I just can’t deal with a commute that’s longer than a short walk. If I can’t get housing at Porter, though, I’ll begin to look off campus myself. I really don’t want to settle for any of the other colleges. I picked Porter because of its location and I have no desire to live in the apartments. We’ll see what happens, though. I’m still putting in my application with my fingers crossed, but I won’t hold my breath.

You might be right about Kresge. I do still wonder, though, if they might eventually have a problem. Not to the degree Porter is having, or course, but some level at least. I hope you’re right, though.

I wish we knew who was making these horrible decisions. I find it hard to believe it’s Porter. Joe just doesn’t seem the type to promise us one thing and then change his mind later. He seemed genuinely apologetic and embarrassed in regards to the situation when I confronted him about Building A not being a choice during room selection last May. He told me he tried to keep at least a floor in A for upperclassmen, but it “just didn’t work out how he wanted.” He knows first hand how much this is hurting the Porter affiliates and the transfers. I can’t imagine he’d purposely cause more trauma unless someone else was pulling the strings.

I wonder if someone at STARS would listen if I told them how damaging the effect of the TC has been and that it has forced the transfers to become isolated rather than integrated. They’re always spouting about how us transfers are no different, but then something like this is done.

Good luck with off campus housing. The cheaper cost will be nice :). I hope you find a really nice place for the right price!

Kender:
Thanks! I mean, I’d love to live on campus again, but I really don’t like the situation right now and prices are only going up. I totally understand your situation. I have friends in the theater department too who have crazy schedules like that.

And I’ve had my fair share of issues with Joe, but I agree that I don’t think he’s the reason all of this TC stuff is happening. Someone higher up is messing with things and pretty much disregarding everyone else’s opinions. Obviously they don’t care about how this is affecting the rest of us.

I sincerely hope you get a spot for the next school year! You should, considering your affiliation and status, but who knows.

rectangleshorts:
I feel for your friends :(. The hours in the theatre department are crazy. As it is, I keep a safety flashlight with me at all times just because I might have to walk back after dark. Makes me a little easier to spot when I cross the roads. I trust the wildlife far more than I do the drivers on campus.

Campus is so expensive to live on. If I recall right, we’re among the top ten most expensive in the nation. It’s ridiculous especially when you see the amenities some other colleges have for their students housing wise even though they pay significantly less than us (even at other colleges in California). Heck, I’ve even been stuck with one of the unadvertised small singles this year, but was paying the same cost as those singles next to me with 20 square feet more than my room.

You’ll have to let me know what you end up finding off campus :)
