Questions about life at UCSC? ASK HERE :)

ok but the thing is it isnt drug paraphernalia, its a tobacco water pipe… if i keep it clean with no resin, what can they complain about.

They consider it drug paraphernalia. You can make as many excuses as you want, but they still won’t allow it.

I suggest thinking of a good way to hide it.

What would you say the music scene is like? From my experience it seems like most students are into dance and electronic music, which I love!
What sort of internships are there available for people who want to go into journalism? Does UCSC have their own campus newspaper?

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone knows how much it costs to leave your car off-campus? Or how do the zip cars work? And also how much do they cost? Thank you!

Off campus parking is limited, often far from campus, and likely expensive. It is not something I would recommend.

Zipcar is easy. It’s $35 annually to join and you will get $35 worth of driving credit to use your first month. If you do a search, though, you can often find sign up bonuses meant for the much more expensive individual plans (ours is subsidized by the university). I was able to get $110 of driving credit for only a $35 annual fee ($75 new account bonus). It came in very handy.

Anywho, essentially you just sign up, they check your records to make sure you qualify, and then they will send you a zipcard (this is how you unlock and lock the vehicles). They will send it to your credit card billing address unless you call them to have it redirected to your address in Santa Cruz.

After that, you just sign up online to reserve a zipcar when you want one. It’s $8/hour on weekdays, $9/hour on weekends. This cost includes 180 free miles (you are charge for every mile over this), insurance*, and gas. The cars disappear fast on weekends so reserve early if you need it over the weekend.

*The insurance for anyone under 21 is the minimum the state requires which is surprisingly low for California. Those over 21 are given much better coverage.

When you get to a zipcar you reserved, you should always walk around it and check to see if there is any damage. If there is, immediately call zipcar and, after going through the phone tree, you will be able to leave a message about the damage you found. This prevents you from being liable. If the car is missing or unable to be driven, you are also supposed to call, but you will be prompted through to an operator to speak to. I highly recommend if there is damage that you take a picture to document it.

Something to be careful of is late fees. It is much better to extend your time (if the car is available… and this can be done by texting zipcar) than to return a car late. Extending a half hour on a weekday is $4 (not including tax). Returning the car a few minutes late is $50.

You can find more information here: [UC Santa Cruz - Zipcar](UCSC Car Rental | Zipcar at University of California, Santa Cruz)

Oh wow thank you so much! That does not sound bad at all, I guess my car will be staying home the next four years.

So do a lot of students use them? Like in a regular basis?

It seems like they’re always gone on the weekends, that’s for sure XD. I usually have no problem getting one on a weekday, but they seem like they get regular use. Also, if you like naming things like I do, then you’ll love how zipcar names the vehicles in their fleet. I’m quite fond of Coman (a Honda Civic in College 8’s lot) myself :). Oh, also, zipcars are able to park in spots that would normally require an A permit. Quite nice, really.

If you’re going to be more than 100 miles (or whatever your insurance names as the minimum miles) from home, by the way, check to see if your insurance can be lowered while you’re away from home, but allow you to still drive when you go home. The benefit to not bringing your car is you save not only on this cost (if available), but also parking, gas, and extra wear and tear to your vehicle. Add in zipcar as an option when you have to have a car and it’s a decent trade off for many. Not all, but many.

Tip: It can add up so it’s a good idea to get together with friends and split the cost of the cost of the rental. I’ve seen this be especially popular with those in the apartments when they need to do food runs.

By the way, I fully admit to being biased towards zipcar. They’ve treated me quite nicely the time I’ve been with them as a member so you can’t really blame me, though ;). Love the service, the operators have always been friendly when I called about issues. Not to mention quite silly and fun in email responses! My favorite part is the emails are not stock, but someone actually responding to you! I love that they don’t take themselves so seriously that they can’t crack a joke with you.

Haha wow thank you so much! You have officially brainwashed me into a zipcar lover!

I cannot stress how serious this is. If you’re under 21, ZipCar only covers you for the state minimum. If you are involved in any moderate accident, there is a good chance that you will be over the policy limit. For this reason alone, I cannot recommend zipcar to anyone under 21.

Some state minimums are actually decently high. California, sadly, not so much. The main issue arises if you are at fault for the accident or if no one is deemed at fault.

Not something I’ve ever looked into deeply so I don’t know the full possibilities (or lack there of), but one could see if their own insurance from home covers anything when driving another vehicle. I do know the coverage exists through some sources, but I have never explored it more than that and I don’t know how it would apply to a program like zipcar. Unfortunately, this would mean giving up any “X distance from home” discount that might have been possible.

I do agree, though, the coverage issue for those under 21 is something to be highly cautious of.

Speaking of insurance, another good thing to look into is what one’s parents’ home owner’s insurance covers (or renter’s insurance). Depending on the coverage, your items while away at school might be covered. For example: my mom has drop insurance for laptops added to her coverage. Since I still use her house as my legal/permanent address, my laptop is covered as well.

which would current students represent to an incoming freshman: co-ed or same gender floor?
do you usually get your first pick?

Does anyone know what the surf club is like?
Also, is it possible/convenient for transfers to bring a car if they’re living on campus, I plan on going to Santa Clara and SF a lot, plus drive to the beach every day and I don’t think I could survive without a car

Also can’t answer 4 because I didn’t know there were cheerleaders… There are plenty of dance classes to take though. Sorry this isn’t very helpful.

Bike question: how reasonable would it be for me to bring my fixed gear bike to campus? It only has one gear, so hills would be impossible; I was just wondering if anyone else rides fixed at UCSC.

Is there a TRX band system in the ucsc gym? Nope.
What are the gym hours? 7AM-9PM
Where is the martial arts room? By the gym.
