Oncogirl:
It is super easy to get from San Jose Airport to Campus. The drive time doesn’t actually take that long but waiting for the buses sometimes does. You get off your plane, get on the 10 bus for a few minutes and that takes you to the Caltrain. Take the train for a 3 min ride and that will drop you off at the 17 express which is the bus that takes you to Santa Cruz. It sounds like a lot but it is really easy and cheap (like $10.00).

Which college would you recommend for a lot of Chicano’s and Hispanics being in that college.

I read the brochure of colleges but it still doesn’t say much.
I was wondering from the perspective of current UCSC students how the colleges are individually.

And yeah, sorry it might be hard because one tends to adapt and get used to their college so it’s kinda biased but I want opinion before Spring Spotlight… which I’ll see you guys there !
Thanks

What would be the college for a philosophy major? What about mathematics? I’m a prospective philosophy major, but more specifically my interests lie in philosophy of math, logic, metamath, etc.

And are there any colleges that stand out as having weird, but not political, students?

Ok, and why not, let’s get really specific: are there any metalheads at ucsc? would they be most likely found at any particular college?

Thanks!

And as a side not to whoever mentioned him, Prof. Bauerle taught at my math club in middle school lol. From what I can remember as a middleschooler, he’s great! lol :)

i recently got accepted at ucsc
but my situation just changed a bit
and i really need some advise

here is a link to my post, please please advise:

thanks so much for the great,detailed info!

hi again…how is the cellphone coverage on campus? is there one that works way better than the others? I had to change cell carriers when my other child went to college…wondering if I should this time …we have t-mobile right now
thanks!

Every college is a fine college for philosophy or math majors. Your classes will be all over campus. Just pick the college that you like the best.

There are plenty of weird students everywhere! Weird is a very subjective term. I consider myself weird too. I suppose College eight may be the ‘least weird’ of the colleges, while Crown or Porter may encompass some of the weirder students. Though, I am sure my opinion is different from the next poster.

I am sure there are metalheads everywhere. Again, each college is a collection of students from a variety of backgrounds.

@oncogirl

Cellphone coverage is decent. When you go out to some of the more barren areas on campus, you will get dropped calls. My friends have always said that Verizon is best, but I really don’t know if there is a difference between carrier reception.

I’m a transfer student, and I would like to live in the dorms. What do I need to do to apply for housing at UCSC?

@Cali Trumpet

You’re forgetting Kresge If anything, I think Porter and Kresge have the “weirdest” people. You never know what you’re going to see walking around either college… But that’s what is fun about them!

Does anyone know when the next batch of decisions come out?

Cowell is awesome. Lots of chill people, best views on campus, close to everything. It’s the most “desired” college, so I was surprised I got in there since it was my first choice. If I weren’t at Cowell, I would want to be at Stevenson

@rectangles

Ah, how could I forget about Kresge? Definitely add that one to the list.

My son is a freshman at UCSC and he just loves it! He is at Cowell. In fact I am driving up tomorrow to bring him home for spring break. Cowell was the college he felt he fit in most, although he has friends at Crown. I remember last spring while taking the UC bus up to Spring Spotlight (I think we met at Merrill? not sure) I initially thought: wow, I want to be here myself! The whole place is awe inspiring. It’s a beautiful environment. Everyone was super friendly and helpful too. But anyway, my son is having a great time, has made new friends (and some of his high school classmates attend there), and he is on the Dean’s Honors list as well.

how is downtown? is it very lively and urban-like or no…

There are a lot of little shops, surf shops, restaurants, cafe’s, and a Borders store. There movie theaters too. I guess a big thing is going to the midnight shows downtown.

@sunny For me, downtown has a love hate relationship. On one hand, it is very ‘cute’ and has everything a college student could want and more. 2 movie theaters, family owned restaurants, frozen yogurt shops, coffee shops, etc. On the other hand, many of the homeless individuals are on something more than not and weird stuff sometimes happens. However, I feel very safe walking by myself downtown. Almost always, other students are walking around at the same time that you are. You can check out this website for more information [Welcome to the Downtown Association of Santa Cruz - Santa Cruz, CA - Downtown has Great Shopping, Outdoor Dining and Professional Services](<a href=“Downtown Santa Cruz - Santa Cruz, CA”>http://www.downtownsantacruz.com/)

Are there any people planning to head into pharmacy at Santa Cruz?

thanks blaukat & calitrumpet for the info!!
i have 2 more questions though:
- even though there is the downtown shops and all, is there a mall nearby where i can like go shop at the “regular” stores like H&M, Target and forever 21?
- and what other attractions are near by ucsc?

haha you can kind of tell i love shopping… looool
thanks in advance!

Well, the closest Target is in Watsonville, which is about a 15 minute drive from downtown SC. So, if you or someone you know has a car, it’s totally doable. The closest mall is Capitola Mall, which is much closer than Target, but still takes the same amount of time to get to as Target (because you’re mostly on surface streets, and people drive a little slower in SC). The mall isn’t great, but it’s not horrible either. I think I was just used to Los Angeles malls, which are huge and almost awe-inspiring, lol. This isn’t that.

As far as other attractions, there’s the boardwalk, the whole downtown area, the beaches, and other stuff too (I’ve only lived in SC since December). You can find a decent amount of stuff to do if you look for it. Also, SC is about 30-40 minutes from San Jose (the closest larger city). What kind of “attractions” are you looking for, can you be a little more specific? Anyway, hope that helps at least a little!
