Questions about options for SAT prep

Considering a range of SAT prep options:

  1. Official practice tests (+College Board answer explanations & Khan)
  2. Review books
  3. Review classes
  4. Tutor (group vs individual)

Are there certain options that are a better fit, for example, for:

  • Freshmen vs juniors, for example
  • 1000 looking to get to 1300 vs 1300 looking to get to 1600
  • Those who haven’t yet taken high school classes for all of the math content covered on the test
  • Less time vs more time available for prep
  • Any other variables I’m missing (besides level of self-motivation, which is pretty self evident)

In addition:

  • How long in advance of SAT is ideal for each approach?
  • If multiple approaches ideal, is there an ideal sequence?
  • How many times is optimal for taking SAT (is there a point of diminishing returns)?

For options 2-4, would welcome any specific individual/company recommendations (which would be most helpful, especially if tied to the fit factors.

Finally, would any of the answers differ significantly for ACT?

I know different pieces of this have been covered across different threads but I haven’t seen a single source - apologies if I’ve missed such a comprehensive thread (and would be grateful to be pointed to it)
