Can anyone tell me a little but about Greek life at Pitt, specifically fraternities? I am pre med and know that it is very time consuming but I am mostly worried about pledging. How long exactly does pledging last at pitt because I know it varies by school? Also, would you recommended pledging in the fall or spring for someone whose main worry is their gpa? I know that fall has more pros than spring. How hard is it to keep a good gpa? At pitt, would you say it’s necessary for a guy to join a fraternity to get into good parties like at penn state type schools? Thanks
I don’t know any specifics, but I don’t think the fraternity culture is as big at Pitt. I believe there is a minimum number of credits before you can pledge. If you are a freshman, especially in premed I would recommend you focus on academics to attain a high GPA. The Chem and Bio classes you will take have hundreds of students in lecture.
There should be honor societies for premeds? If you get good grades, do research, etc that should be more impressive to med schools than being part of a fraternity.
Also you will have to be careful how you conduct yourself socially if you want to get your professional license some day.
Greek life is there if you want, but absolute not necessary for anyone’s social life if you don’t want it. Only about 10% are greek at Pitt. More than enough parties exist for anyone, greek or non-greek, to satisfy their need to blow off steam. Pitt is an urban school so there is a lot more going on in and around the university, socially and culturally, than at schools located in the middle of nowhere like the “penn state type schools.”
