Questions about scholarship.

I am an international student who intends to apply for Spring 2012 term at Howard University. I have the following questions:
1. Is an international high school student who applies for Spring 2012 term eligible for the Howard University Freshman Scholarship?
2. Also, may an international applicant submit an application with all the credentials except the Statement of Financial Resources, be awarded one of the Howard University Freshman Scholarships, and later send the Statement of Financial Resources (with the letter of scholarship award) to the university?

Any comments or answers would be appreciated.

Hi Kakashi 93:

I’ve found an old post on the Howard University International Student section that states the following:

International Students

No scholarships or other financial aid funds are available at this time to entering undergraduate international students. Such students should be prepared to sponsor themselves. A limited number of scholarships are available to qualified students after one year of study if the academic requirements are met.

However Kakashi 93, you should contact Howard University in regards to your specific circumstances. Upon review of the PDF application, the International Application requires a “Statement of Financial Resources” and states that International Students are required to list the exact amount of funds available to them, as well as the sources of orgin of those funds. Here are two sites that will assist you in answering any questions you might have.

[International Student Admission - Howard University](http://www.howard.edu/enrollment/admission/international.htm)

[International Student Services - Howard University](http://www.howard.edu/internationalservices)

Also, you can call the Office of International Services at: (202) 806-7517.

Hope I’ve been of some help.

Thank you for your reply, LilMamma.

But what about the Howard University Freshman Scholarship (HUFS) [Grants, Scholarships & Fellowships - Howard University](http://www.howard.edu/financialaid/grants_scholarships.htm?) . International student applicants are eligible for this scholarship, aren’t they? According to this chart of eligibility http://www.howard.edu/financialaid/pdf/basicsoneligibility.pdf</a> , I (international student) will still be eligible for some university scholarships(including the above one), won’t I?

I found the chart on this page: [Financial Aid Basics & Eligibility - Howard University](http://www.howard.edu/financialaid/basics.htm)

Anyway, thank you for your comment. I am very grateful.

Hi Kakashi 93:

I “believe” you’re referring to the Donor Scholarships mentioned/listed on the Howard University website? There will be more information specific to your particular circumstances if you contact the International Student Advisory (and I’d suggest you do so as soon as is possible). Generally, Scholarships are awarded the semester PRIOR to attendance and once all of the monies are depleted, there are now new awards until the following School year. (Contact the International Student Advisory to see if there are any specific scholarship awards for International Spring Admits?) Usually, (as a Spring admit), your attendance is occurring AFTER the issuance of scholarship monies has been awarded for the full financial year. Scholarships awarded to individual recipients- the semester prior to enrollment/attendance.

Here is some more information that will give you a framework for how early Scholarship applications are expected:

The Donor Scholarship Application is available online now at: http://www.howard.edu/financialaid/pdf/1112/Donor%20Scholarship%20Application%201112.pdf</a></p>

o Awards will be made in July

o New students for Fall 2011 do not need to complete this form and will be automatically considered

o Application is only for those scholarships administered by the Office of Financial Aid. Students may still inquire with their academic department/dean’s office for other forms of assistance

o No student is guaranteed an award (regardless of GPA, filing date or other criteria met). Our team will do our best to match eligible students with available funds. Priority is assigned by 1) how closely the student meets the donor’s criteria, 2) application submission date, 3) any additional financial need or academic merit.

Call Howard University’s International Student Advisory, so that they can help you with any scholarship opportunities that may be available to you. Call soon !

Much success to you !!!
