well guys, i am trying to seriously fill out applications now, even though i’m torn between waiting until dec 15 (and possibly, although not likely, saving a few hundred dollars…) and sending other apps in now. but that is beside the point!! i have questions about the common app:

from the common app instructions: “All colleges selected on this list receive your current active application at the same time.”
-ok, so at first i skimmed over the instructions and thought this meant that when you select a college, your current common app is sent to the college. what exactly DOES this mean? does something happen the second you select a college? can you update your college list- delete schools from your list, for example- without anything happening?

can you send the common app to one college, change it a little, and then send it to another school?

do you have to send the common app and the supplement to a school at the same time?

any clarification would be wonderful! they’re probably also stupid questions, but that just means you can answer them all the better, right?

Nothing happens when you select a college. The college is simply added to a list of recipients...these colleges will all receive the common app when you finally press submit. It's not easy to "accidentally send" so don't worry about it.

When you submit the app, it is sent to all colleges on your list at the same time. If you want to send it to some colleges but not others, you have to remove the others from your list before sending it to the first colleges. Then, you can edit it and submit to additional colleges. You can't go back and resubmit to the first colleges.

The supplement and common app don't have to be sent at the same time

All this info is on the common app page. do your reading.

sorrrrryyyyyy i did read it actually (not incredibly in depth i must admit) and i was pretty sure about the answers to those questions but then i started second-guessing myself and i wanted some outside opinions before i choose colleges to add to my list, just in case. thanks though!

The schools indicated in gray will not process the common app without the supplement. I can't see why you would want to send the common app first if they specifically ask you not to.

Please Note: An application which is saved but not submitted is subject to deletion after ninety days.

Please Also Note: You are saving the first page of your application. Once saved, the school you selected will have access to your application. Please understand that an incomplete application will not be used for admissions or recruitment purposes; however, you may receive an inquiry from your chosen college asking if you require assistance in completing your electronic application. You may revise your application up to the time when you request that it be submitted to your chosen university.

Harvard will say, "I've noticed you've begun your application. It seems like you could use a little encouragement. You can do it!!! Now do you still need assistance?"
