Questions about the Dramatic Writing portfolio...

I am looking to apply this year Early Decision for the Dramatic Writing program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. I am within the range of acceptance, I think, academically, but I am terrified at the prospect of submitting a professional portfolio.

Is there anything that I should definitely, definitely add? Would it be smart to include scenes from a play or snippets of a larger work? Is poetry allowed at all? Is DW the kind of program where the portfolio is more important than the academics? Anything you can think of regarding this would be helpful.

Here’s what I have heard from a friend who is in the program:

Poetry is discouraged. If you’ve submitted everything you can think of and still have space (keeping in mind the 25 page max), go ahead and throw in poetry, but it shouldn’t be the prominent work.

Yes the portfolio is more important than the academics, but the academics are still important.

Play snippets, monologues, screenwriting samples-- all good.

Good luck :)
