So I'm applying to NYU Tisch, and the portfolio section for my major, Dramatic Writing, is stressing me out. It wants 3-4 separate writing pieces that total up to 15-25 pages. I'm not sure it it'll allow samples from feature-length screenplays I've written, or if it truly wants short writing pieces in their entirety. Can someone help me out with this?

I also applied to NYU, but a WHOLE different major, so I don’t have experience with what you’re dealing with. I would say contact your regional admissions counselor that’s listed on the NYU site! That’s helped me out a lot with any questions I’ve had and the like, and I can only hope it does the same for you. Here’s the link (and good luck with everything!): [Contact an Admissions Counselor](Questions)

Hey,

I’m in the program right now and I submitted both complete short works and a sample from a screenplay (like a complete scene from it). However, I know they’ve tweaked the submission requirements so I recommend checking with the department! You can find their number/email on the dramatic writing website. Good luck! :)

Hey! I’m currently a freshman. From what I understand (we had a fun little Q&A sesh about the admissions process during orientation), the thing they’re MOST looking for is a sense of your unique voice as a writer (they’re less concerned about formatting/content), so you should be good to go. I definitely submitted a piece of a longer screenplay and don’t think they’ve changed the requirements since then, so I’d double-check, but I think you’re okay! Best of luck! Let me know if you have any other questions, too, I’d be happy to help.

Hey,

I’m applying in the same program, I just sent my portfolio in. It was 3 samples, all original screenplays. I think they’re mainly looking for a unique, interesting applicant with a good writing style and a strong understanding of narrative conventions. I’m pretty sure the new portfolio requirements say that all the samples should be self-contained dramatic works with a beginning, middle, and an end. I don’t think excerpts from other works are viewed in as positive a light as original works.

That’s just my perspective. Good look on your application! I hope we both get in.
