Questions about the Kilachand Honors College!

I’m a high school senior who was recently accepted to KHC.
Can any students currently enrolled in the college give feedback about what they like and don’t like about it? Is it beneficial to your academic progress, or do the college specific classes get in the way of more important classes that pertain to your major? Do the college specific events get in the way of having a social life? Are the RAs super strict? Thanks in advance!

Hi Arvazi!

I’m a student currently enrolled in KHC and am more than happy to answer your questions.

  1. What I love most about KHC is that it’s a program that allows me to explore other disciplines beyond my major without the pressure of minoring or double majoring. I’m currently a biology major but I have several other academic interests (film and public health) that go beyond what my major offers.

There isn’t much that I don’t like about the program, except for the usual stress provided by your classes. However, something to keep in mind about the program is that it does not fit everyone. It’s a program designed to expand your interests and allow you to explore. Thus if you’re a student that would like to very much hone in on his or her major and is not willing to adapt with the curriculum, then this program might not be the best for you.

  1. In terms of academics, KHC fulfills all of the general, divisional requirements of your home school. In the College of Arts and Sciences for example, all of my general social science and humanities credits are fulfilled by KHC. It does not get you out of your language requirement in CAS however.

If you’re looking at classes outside of your major with the perspective of them “getting in the way” of your major classes, then any other class (regardless of being a KHC course or not) is going to seem frivolous. From my own, personal standpoint, KHC classes have given me a great opportunity to take classes that aren’t solely limited to my major. If anything, I’m grateful for being able to take more non major specific classes.

  1. No, the college specific events do not get in the way of having a social life. Most of the teas and study breaks are optional. The mandatory co-curricular events are evenly spaced out throughout the semester and are usually on weekdays.

  2. The RA you get is a toss up, regardless of where you go. From my experience, my KHC RA’s have been regular and a good balance of responsible yet sociable with the floor.
