Questions about WPI - greek life, double majoring, international, athletic clubs, dorm

Hi! I got accepted to WPI (EA) and was wondering if any current WPI students could help me to make a final decision.

  1. I have heard that only 30% of the students part take in fraternities or sororities. Is this true? Also, is it true that it's difficult to get into parties if you're not a part of any fraternity or sorority?

Also, how expensive is it to get into a sorority?

  1. Is double majoring common in WPI?
  2. About what percent of students are international students in WPI?
  3. I've always loved to play sports but I'm not amazingly talented at them. Are there clubs for people like me?
  4. How are the dorms like? (New? old?) I think I like the Stoddard Complex or Founders Hall. But which building do you recommend and why?

Thank you in advance!

@mudbloodforlife S is a Freshman at WPI. I can’t speak to the greek life/party question as our S isn’t into the party scene very much and is pretty busy with his academics and extracurriculars. That said I think double majoring is pretty common and some programs are actually designed for double majors. S is a double major Comp Sci/Math. He also plans to be part of the fencing club next year and has 0 experience Fencing. He is part of the Marching pep band and while he has a ton of background there, many others do not. Think the same is true for pretty much all the clubs. Seems there is a real culture of experimentation with new things. S’s Dorm is not great, but not horrible. He is actually in Riley (one of the oldest). Most Freshman are in Daniels or Morgan which are both pretty new. They are also building a brand new dorm which Sophomores have priority to enter next year when it opens.

My son is an international student. I think the percentage was 18 or so. Lots of club sports. In my experience, Greek life is not as big of a thing in New England as in other parts of the country, so if that is important to you, perhaps it’s not a good fit.

Greek life is big at WPI. Women get into parties, men not in the fraternities need an invite ( used to be that way anyway). Not sure about the New England perspective above. I believe “Animal House” is based on a New England school - might be Dartmouth.

Most freshman are in Morgan, Daniels or Riley halls on the quad. Originally all doubles, those are now mainly triples. Riley is the oldest. Morgan and Daniels are probably from the 1970’s. Founders hall is suites, has its own dining hall and, unless things have changed, is for sophomore students and up. It was built in the late1980’s. Double majoring is not uncommon. The international population is relatively small for an engineering school since WPI draws heavily from high schools in the northeast. I would estimate about 20% international.

@chel17 thank you for your response! I guess I shouldn’t be afraid to join a sports club then.
