Questions and Answers Thread for Canadian Applicants

Yeah, you’re allowed to do that.

Thanks MajorLazer
Also, are there any schools with need-blind admission for canadians AND early action (non-binding)?

Yale, SCEA ^

If you apply SCEA to Yale you can’t send out ANY other early apps.

Do McGill and Toronto mostly look at first-semester grade 12 or do other grades matter just as much/more

What first semester grades would make someone a lock considering all As with a few Bs in grade 10 and 11?

^ for regular admission they only care about your grade 12 marks, for early admission they look mostly at your grade 11 marks. Your grade 10 marks simply don’t matter

That’s awesome, my grade 11 marks were good but not great (mostly 90s, a few 80s second semester) but I’m doing RA. So hopefully I can pump out some 95’s in Grade 12 and secure a spot.

Hey guys, can anyone answer this question? I was wondering, with my average stats and stuff (you can see my chance threads for full info…), will applying ED to Wharton help me at all? I’ve been looking at what people are saying about Upenn and I am not 100% sure if I’d love it there…(safety issues, not guranteed on-campus housing, bad meals…) On the other hand, Harvard seems to be the most ideal college. I know it’s like a super reach…though I’m wondering how much harder it is to get into Harvard than Wharton?

I think safety concerns are exaggerated. Penn basically has a private army, and the area doesn’t get “bad” for a good 5-10 blocks west of campus. Crime exists (there were a few shootings last year near campus) but I don’t know anyone who feels that it’s a huge issue in the average Penn student’s day to day life.

Housing is guaranteed first year. There’s a good chance you won’t want to live on campus after first year anyway, and it’s not that big of an issue. Off-campus housing is readily available and cheaper than dorms. Yeah, the food sucks. That’s college for you. A lot of people don’t bother with meal plans after freshman year.

Harvard’s acceptance rate is like 7.5% and Wharton’s is ~10%. Your odds are low either way :p

“few shootings last year near campus” ~sounds scaryy x.x
But will applying ED really help an applicant in my case? I heard only if your stats are at the top 25% of the Wharton freshman class should you apply ED…

Yeah, Penn is definitely not the safest univ. to go to. Someone got shot in the leg in the movie theatre right outside campus several months ago during a botched armed robbery (it was a Drexel student though). Bike theft is like the biggest problem, though. Bikes just get stolen like crazy. But just use common sense (and a U-lock) and you should be fine.

Hey, is it ANY harder for Canadians or Canada PRs to get into need-blind schools? The harder-as-international thing is just for need-aware schools right?

Umm, thats a hard one to answer (no pun intended). In my opinion, no it isnt. However, you have to take into account the fact that Canadians are not as prepared for the SATs in school as Americans, so we need to prepare ourselves (which can lead to confusion).

Short of that, I dont think it is any harder… except for schools that have a quota of Intls admitted per year (even though no one really considers us international, we actually ARE)

From what I heard from visits:

at Princeton: Canadians are in the Eastern US pool, so we are compared to Eastern Coast americans (as well as school, region, etc.)

at Yale: We are in the international pool, and the guy doing the small presentation there stated that it was a tad more competitive at the international level.

For the rest (Harvard, etc), I don’t know. But I do know that the international pool tends to be more competitive because usually, the only students who hear about ivies (and so who apply) are the “excellent” ones, either by own research or by counselor suggestion, so you have much less of this “oh, I’ll apply just for the hell of it” that you may (?) find in the US

Hey Perle, how specific were you when listing out your awards. I’ve won some international awards before, but never knew how to word them in the right context. For example, did you put ‘Poetry contest (school representant at provincial level)’ on your common app, or was it more specific in terms of title. Thank you :)

Hey fellow Canadians,

Perhaps this question has already been answered, but I’d appreciate it if you guys would answer it for me again  I would love to go to an American school, but I would have to receive some financial aid to make my dream a reality. So, based on financial aid, which American schools are the most generous?

-Blair

^Ivies. 10 char

I have a question. The ED deadline for Penn is nov 1…but I think I read somewhere that this date is only for the common app…if this is true, can you send in the recs after the date? Would that be punished? Also…is there an option to rush your test scores in the free reports? Thanks!

^The schools are usually more lenient with recommendation letters. So a few days of delay will be fine.

Thanks happysunnyshine! A few days will be fine…what about a week or 2? Do they have policies on this on their official website or anywhere?

What about rushing test scores? Anyone?
