Canadian thinking of going to MIT

Hello,
I'm a Canadian living in Toronto, Ontario. I have never really thought about applying to an American school up until now. Unfortunately I realized that I should try out for MIT a little too late. I thought the American application deadlines were similar to that of Canadian, but I thought wrong. :(

The next set of SAT tests are on Jan 28, and the results for those will be in a few weeks after that (sometime in February). The MIT website also says that they will accept January SAT tests on a case by case basis. Can someone explain how that works or tell me if the Jan 28th tests count as "january tests" at all?

Additionally I doubt it will look good on my application that I applied right before the deadline, (if i can make the deadline at all). Moreover I didn't get a chance to do the interviews (which I read are optional). Would I have a chance at all as a Canadian applicant to make it to MIT engineering, or should I just forget about it?

I'm an excellent student (top in my school) with good extra curricular / leadership activities. Right now I'm applying to the best Canadian engineering schools, but from what I've heard they're nowhere close to American. (Talking about U of T and Waterloo) :)

Additionally the $$$ in the elite US schools is way out of my league. I mean I can barely hope to pay my $15,000 per year in Canada. I'm wondering how generous US schools can be in terms of financial aid. If they won't give aid, then I might as well forget about this application process.

Thanks.

What are your stats in terms of accolades and awards?

For MIT, which due to international quotas, accepts about only 4 Canadians a year.

They have a total of 15 Canadians in the entire undergraduate body right now if you look at the common data set.

Most of the International Mathematical Olympiad team is applying, Yufei Zhao and Peng Shi (IMO Bronzes in 2004, IMO Gold and Silver 2005), for sure are two of them, then there are a few others that I know that are extremely strong candidates. I'd dare to say that Yufei and Peng are automatic admits to MIT.

I'd try, but I wouldn't hedge on it. U of Waterloo is a very good school nevertheless.

Thanks for the reply.
I guess my chances are very (very very) slim, however it's always good to try, no? (meh can't compete with the international math olympiad guys. :()
But my question is whether or not it's too late, considering i missed the december SATs.

Also which programs would you say are ranked better. U of T's engineering science or Waterloo's electrical engineering?

Have you done any SATs yet?

If not, then you're in bad shape.

But if you have, then you can do the ones in January and try applying.

You need SAT Is, and SAT IIs, so it'll take two testing sessions to complete all the requirements, but you could ask MIT to confirm I guess.

Even if you took the January SAT I (which is perfectly acceptable for applications), you would not be able to take the required SAT IIs. Sadly, I think MIT is just not possible for you.

As for Canadians going to MIT, it's not the most unheard of thing in the world. A couple of years ago, two guys from my school got accepted into MIT. They were intelligent people for sure, but they weren't part of some international math all-star team. They had excellent grades, recs, SATs, etc., and they had a fair shot at getting in, just like any American.

No I have not done any SATs yet.
So I can't complete two tests in one testing date?

Nope, its either one or the other.

Ok, I read the testing dates are Saturday/Sunday. Does it still mean that I can't do the first set on Saturday, and the next on Sunday?

I'm pretty sure you can only test on Sunday if your religion does not permit you to test on Saturday.

yeah you cant do it like that. sun test is only for religious purposes. also, remember you can't get financial aid unless you apply. i would strongly urge those who have a shot to forget about their financial problems and beg/borrow/steal the money for the apps. then see what their financial aid package looks like. dont worry most top schools will pay for admits who can't afford tuition. good luck.

As for MIT accepting the tests on a case-by-case basis, you should email admissions at mit dot edu, and they will tell you whether or not you can submit scores from those tests.

There wouldn't be any penalty for applying close to the deadline, but as others have noted, Canadians are considered in the international pool, and competition is much more difficult.

If it doesn't work out... there's always the option of taking a gap year or transfer from a great Canadian university... right?

Thanks guys,
I e-mailed both the SAT and MIT people. Waiting for a response now.
If it doesn't work out there's always grad school. That's what counts anyway.

If you haven't taken the sat yet, you're in hot water. I'd still aply though. I suggest you attend undergrad in UofT(which is a comparatively good uni even int he context of us schools), and then transfer, or apply to a us school as a graduate student. I'm not sure if this is what you're thinking, but it's what I'd do if I were in your situation.

Do you know how University of Waterloo ranks by US standards? I have a choice of one or the other, but not sure which. (They're ranked similar in Canada).

Also how hard do you think it is to transfer after first year to MIT? Also would I still be eligible for financial aid? And if I do transfer would I have to start from year 1, or would I be able to jump ahead to year 2...

I e-mailed MIT, they said that January tests are still fine. However the fact that I can't take both SAT tests on the same testing dates is really crappy. I'm waiting for a response from SAT people for that. It would be amazing if I could do one on Saturday and the next on Sunday, however I'm doubting that.

MIT transfer rates hover around 2%, which makes their RD acceptance rate of 13% look generous!

If you are thinking of transferring after freshman year, you'll need to have taken the same classes as a MIT freshman - 2 semesters of Physics, 2 of Calc, one of Biology and one of Chemistry.
