Tomorrow is Admit Day everyone! Hope to see some of you there – I will be!

i’ll be there also! =) i’m sooo excited… so excited i can’t sleep! =D

Cali45,

I have a real quick question regarding Warren’s PofC/AS system and am in need of an advise.

If passing a particular exam gives you 1 course toward SIO or science and technology PofC, and my major (at least one of the possible two…) is going to be in science and technology category, is there any sort of benefit to reap from taking that exam? Aka receiving a credit for a PofC/AS course for the category you are in?

Thanks!

p.s. Admit Day was pretty exciting; saw a lot of old faces and met some new people.

edit:

I lied; this ain’t short anymore. Do you know anyone who was able to opt out of the two “necessary” Warren College Writing Program as a means of transferring from a college/university (e.g. UCLA). The reason why I’m asking this is because I took an upper-level writing-intensive English course at UCLA (English 4W), which, along with AP English score of 5 would normally clear the freshman writing course requirements at UCLA. I am by no means a transfer student, but I would wonder at the enforcement of Warren College to have a junior from UCLA take the WCWP classes simply because “both courses must be taken at UC San Diego for letter grade.”

Thank you, again.

Hi, I already signed my SIR for Warren and I’m majoring in PharmChem. =) So I’m super excited!!!

I know it’s kind of early to even consider taking honors classes for next year. But I was wondering if you could give me any insight onto the pros/cons of taking an honors class? Any personal experiences? The honors class I’m considering taking next year is chem. I don’t know if I really want to push myself too much frosh year. I feel really burned out right now from 8 APs over the last 4 years. I took AP Chem last year and got A’s and a 5 on the exam, so I think I’m certainly capable of taking an honors class in that area. Right now I’m looking at going into pharmacy so would taking an honors chem class be wise?

Hi cali45, you said earlier that engineering majors are impacted and only let in a certain amount of students. Do ALL engineering majors fall under this? I read on the Jacobs website that only Mechanical, Aerospace, and Bioengineering are impacted. Btw, I’m an Undeclared admit that is hoping to declare into a non-impacted engineering major.

Perched –

Unless that exam passes you out of a class for your major, then no, it doesn’t benefit you.

You will have to ask a Warren advisor about your particular situation. I’ve heard of a story about a student passing Warren Writing classes with some other class, but I do not remember his circumstances.

Congratulations! Anyway, I am not in the Honors program, so I do not have any personal experiences of my own. I heard the classes are smaller, so that would mean more interaction with your professors. This could be good for upper division classes, since you will need a letter of recommendation from a professor for pharmacy school.

I took 8 AP classes as well, and consequently felt very prepared for the science classes I took my first year. I did not think the classes were very difficult, and relative to the upper division classes I’ve taken, I studied a lot less for my first year classes. I’m sure you’d be able to handle the honors class, and you’d definitely still be able to relax and have fun. You can try it out for a quarter and see if you like it. In the end, it’s still your decision. Good luck. :)

Yes, only some of the majors are impacted. Sorry for the miscommunication.

For students who are interested in pursuing pre-med, what are the TOP pre-requisite classes I can take at UCSD? By that I mean, for example, in high school you take AP or honors chem, bio, instead of regular bio. So, in college are there advanced classes like these too. And if there are then what are the benefits of taking honors over non-honors then?

Thanks.

If you were to compare honors and non-honors classes, I would not know since I am not in the honors program. Since class size for honors students are smaller, I would assume you would be able to have more interaction with your professors, which may be good for when you’re asking for letters of recommendation. You may be opened up to other networking opportunities as well. However, even as a non-honors student, you can still get good interaction with your professors. As for class content, I can not say.

However, there are certain classes that would give you a head start for medical school such as immunology or pharmacology. You will find out about these as you move along at UCSD, since many of the pre-health students tend to gravitate to those classes for their major electives. Or there are also “easier” upper division biology classes other students take to help raise their science or overall GPA.

Hi again. Are you familiar with how all campus housing works? If there are not enough spaces, will they divide your group up into separate apartments? Also I’ve heard that if you’re a regent scholar/living with a regent scholar, you’ll most likely get in since they’re guaranteed housing all four years. Does this play a factor at all? Thanks.

Physalis –

I’ve only read about All Campus Housing. If there isn’t a space for your group, everyone in your group will have to do General Housing at your own colleges. I’m not sure if a regent scholar will increase your chances. It may guarantee you housing all 4 years, but it may not be specifically All Campus Housing; General Housing is still housing.

You might want to re-check the dates. Those are for the 08-09 school year.

hey sorry for reviving this thread, but cali45, since ur pre-pharm, whyd u pick biochem/chem as ur major? would phamacological chemistry be a better major for pharmacy?

@clark
thanks, but how accurate is the map in general because i looked it up on google earth and it seems kinda long.

^It’s accurate, the only thing is that is takes most people less than 20 minutes to walk a mile.
