Questions for a current student

Hey everyone,

You all have probably seen my posts on this site over the past several months and I've tried to answer any questions y'all may have as best I can. Today at Destination SMU I met a frequent poster on the site who suggested I post a thread where people could ask me questions. So..... ask away! You can really ask me anything about anything at SMU!

-John

Where do you work at SMU ? Do you know if all the admissions acceptances for deferred students have gone out? Do they do mailings according to the geographic areas?

John, you have been really helpful! It might help us if we know what you do at SMU (it appears you work with admissions? or are a tour guide? in any event, could you explain?) thanks so much!

I think dpaul specifically wants to find out about California. We are also from Cali and no one at our school have received regular acceptance packets.

Thanks and yes, what is going on with California? When will we hear about our applications?

Hi John,

My son is trying to decide if he should buy a lap top and leave his desk top here at home. Or should he bring both. Could you tell us what the students use there? I’d appreciate it. Thank you.

I’m glad you took my advice, John!
I met John at Destination SMU last week and he is a sophomore who is part of “Peruna Pals” or the guides/hosts around SMU!! I’m pretty sure he actually works in the admissions office at the Blanton building!

I don’t have any questions as of right now but I"m sure I will soon!

Well my name is John Angle, I’m a sophomore here at SMU from Nashville, TN. I work in the admissions office as a Hilltop Ambassador. Hilltop Ambassadors work in the office and send postcards and letters to prospectives, talk to families when they come for visits, go to college fairs in the area, give tours on big days, and keep a blog. Check our blog at blog.smu.edu/hilltopambassadors to hear our experiences at SMU.

I’m not sure what’s up with your letters. As I said on another thread, we mail the acceptance letters out in batches based on when your application is completed and read. I suggest that if you have a significant concern that you email your counselor about the status of your application.

I believe that all the deferred applicants should be getting their answer soon.

I would say just bring a laptop. I don’t know of anyone who really uses a desktop and it’ll be more of hassle to have them both than a benefit. It doesn’t matter if you have a Mac or PC, but I think the engineering school prefers PCs.

TPaul2 , reception dates for California have been posted on Facebook - SMU class of 2015. Dates are March 19 for LA and March 20 for San Diego and Orange County (Newport Beach), so we should expect admission packets coming in soon.

So you still have gotten nothing? This is really disappointing as there as been no communication here in OC from anyone at SMU. Although I know weather was a factor, it seems that they could at least have the counselor communicate . So no one that you know was deferred has received anything? ANyone in California that was deferred received anything from SMU? John ANgle, why does this make me feel I have not been accepted. Please tell me that more acceptance letters have gone out!

How many people are in the University Honors Program?

Still nothing in the mail as of today TPaul2. D received her congrats email from TCU at the beginning of last week and has not yet received the admission packet. Let’s hope they both arrive by the end of this week…

Thanks John. I tried to sign up for AARO the last two days and a “green” button did not appear for AARO which is supposed to be on the right page of the student center web page (after registering the 4 things: demographic data, emergency contact, phone numbers, and address). The only green buttons are “search for classes”, “honesty tutorial”, and “purchase parking”. Is signing up for AARO not available yet? Thanks again for your help!

still nothing from TCU either but I applied a bit later there. Not early and I should have.
But then, I did at SMU and hasn’t mattered. Have you contacted Rick Diaz

thewong1–but you have heard nothing from SMU, correct?

TPaul2 D submitted her application to TCU and SMU Nov14. We met Rick Diaz at SMU Feb 21 for Mustang Monday and he mentioned they were behind. She received an admission email from TCU and waiting for admission packet but nothing so far from SMU.

I just discovered this thread. If I had discovered it earlier, I would have posted an update. This is Rick Diaz, Regional Dir. of Admission for SMU. I work with students from southern California. Here is the update. Decision letters for applicants who were deferred during Early Action will be mailed this coming Thursday. Mail delivery from Dallas to California can be notoriously unpredictable - anywhere from a few days to over a week. Breathe and be nice to your postal carrier. The main reason why the Admission Committee did not review deferred students earlier is that the majority of students who were deferred attend schools that did not post first semester senior grades until very recently. The Admission Committee looks closely at these grades and felt it necessary to wait for them.

There is no excuse for me not sending an update to all of the deferred students. I will do that this evening. Thanks for keeping me on my toes! Have a good evening. Rick Diaz

Thank you for the update Mr Diaz!!! Much appreciated!!! My daughter submitted her application early but was not consider an early decision applicant, just a regular applicant. Any news for those students by any chance ??? Thank you for your help!!

Hallelujah! OC students and all of Southern Ca applaud you for sending this. It is so stressful because we have called the office and gotten many different answers.
thanks again

My pleasure. All decision letters are being mailed this Thursday. I hope this helps.
