Questions for BU transfer students, from a prospective transfer

Hello! I’m currently a freshman at a top 20 LAC, and not entirely satisfied with my experience here. I’m thinking of transferring for next year, and BU has been one of my considerations. I was wondering if anyone who has previously transferred into BU could answer a few questions for me.

1) What sort of financial aid did you get as a transfer? Also, were you guaranteed housing?
2) How active are the student groups on campus? My school boasts an extensive list of clubs/groups, but I don’t really feel like many of them do anything significant.
3) How much is there to do on campus? My school is lacking in interesting on-campus activities, and I’m looking for a school that provides.
4) How would you rate the quality of the professors? (I’m considering a major in either journalism or English, if that helps)
5) How has your experience at BU been? In general, and as a transfer student. Was it hard to transfer credits/did the requirements put you behind? My school has no required courses, so transferring to a school where this is not the case might take some adjusting.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I’m trying very hard to get a good feel for the colleges I’m thinking of transferring to. I apparently didn’t do such a good job of that when deciding on a school last year! Anyway, thank you so much for your help!

I transferred from Fordham University to Boston University for the Fall 2009 semester and couldn’t be happier with my decision.

1) I was lucky enough to not have to go through the financial aid process. I know many people at BU that have received generous amounts of financial aid. For transfers I think it’s a little tougher but probably doable. In terms of housing the earlier you get in the better for housing I’m not sure if it is guaranteed but I think for the most part any transfer that wants housing can get it, and if you don’t there are affordable off campus options.

2) Student groups are very active on campus, coming from a school where there wasn’t much of that its amazing to see. These groups are visible and within the first week you can attend the clubs/activities fair and you’ll see just how substantial it is.

3) There is usually a lot going on, on campus especially if you join a club. Also things to do within the city that aren’t to far away.

4) The majority of my classes were in the School of Management, so its hard for me to talk on the professors from other schools. However the professors from the liberal arts classes I’ve taken all my professors have been of high quality and stimulating.

5) Again different schools different transferring of credits and requirements. However at Fordham my freshman year I was required to take mainly liberal arts courses and 9 out of 10 transferred over without an issue.

Overall BU is a great school in a great location. It is really easy to make friends, believe me. I have never been the type to join a club or team but BU has so much that I couldn’t resist. The one thing I would caution is that it is a big school, coming from a large city I realized I wanted that but some people are turned off by that. Hope this helps.
