Questions regarding Career Path

Hello All,

I will most probably be attending Rutgers (not confirmed yet) and was wondering whether or not to study Geological Sciences or Chemical Engineering in order to work in the Oil and Gas Industries after I graduate? I do suspect I need to attend graduate school as well, however I am in New Jersey, and the only options to me that make sense are Geology or Chemical Engineering.

You can get there either way, as well as mechanical engineering.

What area of the oil and gas industry would you like to work?

This is the big thing.

If you’re interested in oil & gas exploration, study geology. They typically work with finding sources of oil and gas by looking at constraints and properties earth subsurface.

If you’re interested in production, study mechanical engineering. Doesn’t seem like you’re into this though.

If you’re into refining, study chemical engineering. Refining is where they alter the subsurface oil and gas into whatever they need.
