Questions regarding the Cal grant?

Hi, everyone.

I have a couple of questions regarding the Cal grant. I'll be transferring to a university in L.A. for fall semester, and my long-term plans are to establish my residency and live/work there after graduation. My parents don't earn much money, so I am very thankful and gratified I received a lot of help from the university to make it possible for me to attend. I'm aware of the requirements to be eligible for the Cal grants, but is it possible to receive both the Cal and Pell grants? My parents are worried that I can only receive one or the other, but I'm certain that's not the case.

Also, how likely is it that I will receive the Cal grant if I'm eligible? Do all students who receive Pell grant get the Cal grant as well? I work hard to maintain good grades and get involved every year, so I'm not too concerned about my academics if numbers matter a lot. I've read that there's two packages: A and B. Which one is the "better" package?

Thanks in advance.

If your EFC is low enough to get Pell, then you get it. That’s a given.

If you qualify for a Cal grant, then you’ll get that too.

Many, many Cal grant students also get Pell. There is NO rule that says you can only receive one. One is from the Feds, the other is from Calif.

Thanks, mom2collegekids!
