What makes Wake Forest special? I lived in Winston-Salem until I was about 11 years old, so I already know about the city; I want to know what the academics and student activities are like.

One of my friends was talking about how being white will probably work to her advantage at Wake. I wouldn't want to go to a school where everyone looks and acts the same. Is Wake really a "cookie-cutter" school?

umm... i don't really know what your friend is thinking. I just wrote a 10 pg. paper on affirmative action and it NEVER helps to be white (or male, sometimes) is the college application process. All schools are looking to "diversify" racially and internationally. I am not at wake yet, so i can't answer your other questions. However, I would be careful about sterotyping others - I seriously doubt you will ever find a crowd of 5,000 that "looks and acts the same."

I think Wake Forest topped 17% diversity in last year's class--and I think they want to go higher, so I agree with sandsunandsurf.

For me, Wake was the perfect fit. It has small class sizes and a liberal art education like Davidson, but with a UNC feel (ACC sports, research labs, national speakers, etc.).

All the benefits of a big school with the advantages of a small school's individual attention.

Demon Deacon, I was just reading over a post from a couple months ago; somewhat of a debate between you and another student about Wake Forest's social life, grading, etc. So, I have never been concerned about Wake Forest as a fit for me... until now! I don't drink, don't own a polo (hah, its true) and am an artist/dancer. Should I have reason to worry or is this just "pre-college" stupidity?

I'll second Demon Deacon's point. There's really something to be said about being one of the smallest "large" universities.

As for diversity, they're really trying to increase the diversity of the student body. You've got to give them a fair amount of credit as it is. I mean, forty years ago, there was room for all the girls on campus in Johnson, Bostwick, and Babcock. Wake is definitely not a never-changing bubble (despite what we may say).

I'm not sure that it's exactly "'pre-college' stupidity" because it's something that everyone worries about, but, no, there's no reason to worry. I don't drink and don't own a polo. And while I'm not artistic (in the least) lots of my friends are. I'm perfectly happy here, and I don't wish that I'd gone anywhere else.
