Questions...

Hi,

I am a junior right now, a very stressed at one at that, who has a couple questions about the college admissions process.

How important are AP’s, I go to a school where they offer very few AP’s, and my options are limited. How much would an AP like Psych or Human Geography help.

Does anyone know any good college summer programs? I know about the Harvard secondary schools, but I was wondering if you guys knew of any others. I like in the New England area, and would be willing to go pretty much anywhere within the Northest, extending down to the carolinas.

Do you have better chances of getting in, if you apply early? Also let’s say you apply early and you get rejected, does it hurt your chances of getting into that college as a normal applicant.

For the Sat II’s, since they now added the writing section to main SAT, is it important to have 3 sat II scores. I know for some very competitive colleges it is, but how varied do they have to be. I have/plan on taking math IIc, chemistry, physics and possible Bio, if 2 of my 3 are sciences is that okay, or do I need one from a different subject?

Also for community service, I have done about 100 hours at two different places. Do I need to get any kind of proof or certificate? Or do I just write about it myself on the college app?

Thanks for everyone that responds. You’d really be helping me out.

Cornell and Stanford have really good summer college programs.

<a href="http://www.sce.cornell.edu/sc/index.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.sce.cornell.edu/sc/index.php</a>
<a href="http://epgy.stanford.edu/ap%5B/url%5D">http://epgy.stanford.edu/ap</a></p>

Generally, I don't think you should apply early unless it's a top choice, not just cause you want better chances. However, generally statistics say more people get in early to a lot of the colleges I've see cause of the lower applicant pool.

Thanks alot Muraski...Stanford is a little far ;), but I think I'll look into the Cornell one.

Also another random question. Do AP's hurt you in anyway? Like this year I am planning to take the Statistics and Government AP exams by doing self-study, but lets say I don't do too well on 'em, then can it hurt me? I don't fully understand how to report the AP's.

Your welcome, I'm kind of new to admissions etc. myself so I'm probably not the most qualified, but I don't think AP exams hurt too much, if at all. However, I think if you do really well on them they're worth mentioning.

The number of SATIIs you need to take depends on the schools you want to apply to. Some schools require three, some two, some one and some none. Also, some schools ask you to take particular SATIIs. Check out the requirements of some of the schools you are considering, and then decide. Also, if you intend to major in the sciences or engineering etc., then lots of science and math SATIIs are OK.

In general, applying Early Decision (ED) helps. Many colleges accept a larger percentage of ED applicants than regular decision (RD) applicants. However, if you get rejected ED, you are rejected from that school period, just as if you were rejected RD. Also, if you are accepted ED at a school, you must go to that school. It's binding. Note that some schools do Early Decision. They let you know early, but you are not bound to go there.

Oh okay thnx....also does anyone know about the volunteer?

I realize its not that big a part of the app, but I am not sure if I need to get anything more than simply mentioning it on my app?
