I am not very well versed in this field, but knowing Webster I would think all fields relating to theatre are selective in regards to invites to the program. I believe the "18" Plaidman speaks to is grand total in the following design fields: scene, costume, lighting, make-up and sound design; technical production; and costume construction.

There is a hyperlink that will take you to a page describing what to expect the day of the interview.

If I could turn back the time I wish I had pursued fields such as this when I was younger...I would have been able to combine my love of theatre with my artistic abilities. Opportunities are endless it seems these days.

Best wishes to you...don't hesitate to ask more questions.

5pants has provided good information. Indeed, the 18 does include all areas of the Production Program. There are not specific quotas for any field. We attempt to recruit students to insure responsible assignments as they grow through the program. We are committed to the fact that all of our productions are designed by our undergraduates. There is not a graduate program. The faculty design professionally. Therefore, the 6 plays, three dance concerts, opera studio and a city-wide one act festival are all designed by our undergrads. The program is selective, although the applicant pool is significantly smaller than in performance, we do our best to find students that will fit our needs the best.

hey, reading this thread has given me a ton of new insight to webster, which i am very strongly considering. do you guys know anything about the directing program? i found it to be a HUGE plus that they offer a ba in directing because i dont know any other schools that do. also i was wondering if they are really as strict as their handbook makes them out to be. i wouldn't mind too much if they were but i got kinda confused when i was looking it over and i was like gulp!

Hey everyoooone. =) This is my first post on here. I'm going to be applying/auditioning for musical theatre BFA programs for the fall of 2008. I'm not done with all of my applications yet, because I really want my essays to stand out, but I was just curious as to when everyone had their applications in by. Sooo, I guess this question is directed towards people who are already enrolled. I'm just a bit confused on the whole waitlisting thing...? Answers would be greaaaaaaatly appreciated. Thanks! =)

While I don't have any specific info regarding the BA directing program, my d is a sophomore BFA MT student and loves the conservatory program. The conservatory programs (of which directing is one of) are definitely not for the "faint-hearted", BUT if you love what you're doing, the work-load is probably what you want! I believe that directing students take the same conservatory classes as performance majors for at least the first year. This link provides info re: contacting head of directing and current students:

If at all possible, I'd suggest you spend a day or so on campus "shadowing" a current conservatory student, going to classes and seeing what a "day in the life" is like. In my D's case, she was kind of on the fence about Webster UNTIL she spent the day there. When I picked her up to drive back to the hotel she was like: "this is it"!!

oh yea, the work load is awesome. but can you shadow a person of the desired major? because no offense but i really dont want to follow a dance major around all day when i could explore for myself, lol.

You would shadow a person in your desired major, I believe. I agree, wouldn't make much sense otherwise! Just make sure to emphasize what you need when making arrangements for your visit; we found both general administration and conservatory to be very accomodating in arranging tour, shadowing student, and setting up appointments with faculty!

Welcome to CC! There is a lot of information on these threads about applications/timelines/auditions. I will assume you are asking specifically about Webster. My D applied to the school in September. I believe the school itself has rolling admissions but she wanted to have acceptance in hand early and be considered for as many merit-based scholarships as possible. I think she was accepted to the school in mid-October. After that she scheduled her audition for the Unifieds in Chicago. We only visited after she was admitted to the Conservatory program. I hope this answers your questions, if not, keep on asking!!
