Questions

Hi!
I have already given my teachers all the teacher rec forms, but I have just found out about Smith College. They sent me some info on the sciences there and it is very attractive since i plan to be a science major. However, I am worried that because i dont know how it is like at a women's college.
I am also applying to such colleges as Wesleyan, Pomona, USC, Occidental, and Oberlin. In terms of science which one is the best? So far, Wesleyan is my top choice (though i am not going to ED it) because the sciences seem pretty good over there. How does Smith compare?

Could you also chance me? thanks

Which science programs are you interested in? Narrowing it down would help me focus my reply :)

I plan to major in neuroscience....
how is the premed advisors/programs at the schools?

Well, one of the good things about studying science at Smith is that because our college is so small, you get a lot of chances to do research projects either independently or with faculty starting even as a first year. Those things will of course stand out on your med school applications.

Well, neuroscience requries 54 credits for the major so it's relatively heavy but since you're also pre-med, the major covers some of the med school admissions requirements. I don't have much experience dealing with either programs but from what I hear, people really enjoy both.

You get assigned a premajor advisor before you get here who will help you chart your first semester's classes but after that, you can choose whomever you'd like to be your major advisor. Pre-med students also get a pre-health program advisor, I believe. Lots of people here are on some sort of pre-health track so it's definitely a path well-paved and you won't fall through the cracks. Getting classes won't be an issue because the science and math departments really try to accomodate everyone who wants to take the courses.

I can't really compare Smith's science programs to the programs at the schools you mentioned since I don't know anything about them. All of our programs are really strong so you can't go wrong. The only exception in my mind would be the astronomy program but that's really because we don't offer that many astronomy courses on campus; if you wanted to major in this, you'd be shuttling around to the other Five College campuses quite a bit.

I also wanted to mention the Smith College Emergency Medical Services program. It's an extracurricular activity, I believe, but you can get credentialed to be a paramedic. Hands-on experience is also a plus when applying to med schools.
