Questions

Is it better to choose a major when I'm applying now or is it better to go to Wellesley for a year then figure it out?

Can you double major and have a minor?

I think for any potential college you don’t have to know what major you’re going to pursue upon admission. Some people change their minds and some people stick to what they start with. One of the benefits of a small liberal arts college is that it is easy to explore and take a variety of classes. Your experience in classes, internships, research, etc can be influential to deciding what you want to do.

Unfortunately you can’t double major and minor. Your options are:

 1. One major, no minors
 2. Double major, no minors
 3. One Major, one minor

I suppose that doesn’t stop you from taking those classes anyway.

Even if you “chose” a major while applying, you would still come into Wellesley undeclared. You are required to choose your major in the fall of your Sophomore year if you choose to go abroad, but otherwise you may wait until Spring. Many people (like me) find themselves majoring in things that they did not plan on.

I recommend introducing yourself as a prospective xxxx major as it will give your college search a more defined focus and allow you to compare programs among schools, not bedrooms, architecture and student stereotypes.

Only about half of the incoming first years each year designated a planned major on their application and about half of them change majors. The only major that you need to start on day one is astrophysics. One consideration to think about when designating a major on your application is that when you are assigned an adviser, it will be someone within that department.
