Haha, thanks, psychmom! Yeah, when we all got accepted, I went on a crazy adding spree on Facebook. I figured, no better time to meet the excited/nervous/anxious Vassar class of 2014 than now! Tell your D I said hi!

psychmom - with apple there is also a promotion every summer during which you get a free ipod with the computer along with the education discount (there is also a discount on the applecare service plan), so it you do go that route you would probably want to wait for the promotion. They do it every year.

Yes, my s is enjoying his experience at Vassar. He loves the school. Last semester was a bit rocky academically but he is certainly fully engaged in all of his activities!

just an fyi…i don’t know anyone who uses a laundry service…i don’t even know of one existing near campus. i would highly recommend not using one, especially if nobody else does…seriously…nobody does.

laundry is a completely manageable part of college life and if your daughter has never done her own laundry before, she might as well learn next year!

hope this helps

cre90…I hear you re:the laundry; it will be one of those things she’ll have to decide on her own. From a mom’s POV, it’s nice to know it’s available.

Any other laptop suggestions? What about phone service? Currently, we have an at&t family plan, so I’m hoping the reception is okay there…otherwise, it’s another expense added to the (ever growing) list. What would you say provides the most convenient banking? (We have Bank of America now). Also, I will be going up there with her in August…I’m figuring 3 days…does that sound right?

matt: your friendliness/enthusiasm is wonderful, so keep at it! My D knows of 2 kids from her HS who are applying ED2, both of whom are really nice, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed for them! I know they would love your warm welcome should the acceptances go their way.

Chris’mom: Great to hear that your S is staying busy and enjoying campus life! Sometimes, I wish I could go back…

Verizon is by far the best cell phone network to have on campus but a lot of people have iPhones and ATT so it’s really not a big deal.

HSBC is the most convenient banking because there is an ATM in the college center and a storefront on Raymond ave near campus but that too is not a big deal. I have wachovia and keep some cash in my room, use my vcash on campus, and use my debit card if necessary. most people (except for international students) dont change banks

an on going up in august…it depends how long you want to be here for. i dont know where you are coming from, but if you fly in most people get a hotel room the night before and then stay the day to help unpack then fly back. it’s really up to you and how long you want to be here. unpacking and moving in at vassar is very seamless and the “house teams” expedite everything. it’ll be done sooner than you think

You guys are so helpful!! xD

This thread answered so many of my questions.

Thanks again, cre90. As a parent, it is a relief to know that Vassar’s moving-in experience is organized; I guess all the other details will work themselves out in time. I am feeling a lot more relaxed about this whole college thing!

@psychmom, For sure! I’m pretty much the guy who adds everyone on the Vassar Class of 2014 group on Facebook, so I’m sure I’ll catch them, haha.

@Hbananah, To participate in the shows that the drama department put up, do you HAVE to be enrolled in The Experimental Theater/have been enrolled? Or is that just for certain department shows?

Mattsaysfierce: To participate in any drama department show, you have to be currently enrolled in or have taken both drama 102 and 103. The experimental theatre is another name for the department shows.

My son is a freshman and move in day was so easy for all of us. We drove up in an old pickup truck loaded with everything imaginable. (Since we live about 2 hours away and my son’s roommate is from Florida, we brought all of the ‘big stuff’.) Anyway by the time I got out of the truck, over half was already unloaded and all I had to carry up to his dorm room was my one bag. It was amazing and so easy!

@HB All right, cool! I was planning out what classes I need to take for my Drama concentration and that clears up a couple of units for me. Thanks!

you’re welcome! Word to the wise. Request a drama prof as your pre-major advisor. (They send a form over the summer) There is no guarantee, but definitely the majority of people who were placed with a drama prof as a pre-major advisor were placed in drama 102, which is a HIGHLY competitive class to get into.

Thanks for the tip; yeah, I saw on the course sched from fall 09 that it was PACKED. Is there a particular prof. that you recommend as a pre-major advisor?

@HB : How often do you go dancing in the Hub? :)

@Matt: You can’t actually request a professor or department for that matter for your premajor advisor. You fill out a questionnaire about yourself and your academic interests and you get paired with someone. Assuming you stress your interest in drama, you will have a drama professor as your advisor but it isn’t assured.

@Gay year: I’m assuming you’re talking about the mug. I personally go about once a month. It is outrageous and can be lots of fun. It’s a great asset for students here

Yes, yes the mug I’m sorry. That’s good to hear, it sounds awesome. I wish I could have seen it on my tour, but I didn’t want to seem obnoxious.

@cre90: actually, I did request a department and was placed in it. One of the questions is what area would you like your advisor to specialize in? I specifically requested to have an advisor in the drama dept. and that’s what I got! (and of course nothing is guaranteed, but it never hurts to ask).

@Gay year: I also assume you mean the mug. I don’t go THAT often. (about once every 6 weeks) but lots of people really like going and it IS a great asset to the students vassar.

Haha its gap year! Lol.

lol sorry bout that. I just copied cre90.

How’s history at Vassar?

And which dorm is the best in your opinion? =]
